As children grow in their communities and learn their specific culture and language, they also learn important social stances of their society. One particular area that they develop are the verbal and nonverbal social roles and actions tied to gender in their community. When parents communicate with their children in different ways, they transfer ideas of adults, both male and female in their society and socialize them to an image of themselves and how they fit into the gender roles of society (Kyratzis & Cook-Gumperz, 2008). A child’s interactions with their family and community shape their views and opinions of gender roles.

Family is the primary source of socialization and make a great impact on gender socialization. Children learn gender, they are not born knowing boys wear blue and girls wear pink. As a result, their family's opinions and social views become the forefront of their beliefs until they receive exposure. Through dramatic play, it was evident the influence that gender roles in the home play on how the students view each other and what is expected of each member of a family unit.
