Summary of Abolitionist

These were people who are anti slavery and spoke out against it. The abolitionist consisted of anyone who went against slavery, from runaway slaves like Frederick Douglass to wealthy white people like William Lloyd garrison. On this topic it's good to bring up the fact that William Lloyd along with Frederick Douglass started a newspaper called the north star. The name of the newspaper is extremely important because it symbolizes the star that a lot of runaway slaves used to aide there escape from slavery.
When talking about slaves escaping using the north star it's also important to mention the reason why slaves followed this star and other factors that helped them escape. The main reason they used the north star was because it pointed north where all the anti slave states were. When escaping people often used quilts to signal where to go and whether or not it was safe, the trails they used to escape were called the underground railroads. They weren't really railroads they were just paths slaves used to escape to freedom.

The temperance movement is a movement that tried to band alcohol. At the time alcohol was a widespread use among everyone men, women, and children. The people who wanted to ban it completely decided to link alcohol abuse to break up of families, mental and physical illness, and crime. In the 1820's the temperance movement was official, by 1850 Maine had banned alcohol and other states soon followed. But laws that banned alcohol were later repealed and the movement started again in the late 1800's. In the end the movement was a somewhat success, because there goal to get rid of it all together failed but they did get a lot of restrictions and limitations put on the use of alcohol. In conclusion they ended up making life healthier for a lot people through there actions.
