CAS Experience: Make an app for an NGO spreading awareness about global warming to teenagers.

Potential Learning Outcomes:
3. Initiate and plan
4. Commitment and perseverance
5. Benefits of working collaboratively
6. Global Engagement

Supportive Evidence:
3. Initiate and plan
-suggest creative ideas, proposals, or solutions
Example: I proposed that we make the app a game where we can save people from global warming by recycling. And doing other basic small day to day actions that can help reduce stress on the planet. If you don't do you your part, then you lose. We used fun character designs and storylines in order to interest people in the game. We also added a gacha aspect because those types of games are currently popular with teenagers.

-is aware of roles and responsibilities when designing an individual or collective CAS experience
Example: I was listening to my classmates and taking suggestions, we would have meetings discussing how to properly divide the work frequently.

-is able to develop a coherent action plan
Example: I was responsible for creating a schedule for to best suit everyones skills and time availability. During that time everyone was assigned strict deadlines.

-gets involved in long-term CAS experiences and CAS project
Example: Making an app takes a significant amount of time and effort, it took us 7 months to complete.

4. Commitment and perseverance
-demonstrates adaptability to uncertainties and changes
Example: There were many times when the app wouldn't work even when we thought it should. One time after working all night to get the game function running, we gave it to a friend to test and it crashed immediately. After crying for an hour, we got back to work and fixed the problem. By that night, that same friend was able to successfully test the game.

-shares skills and knowledge
Example: Not all members were experienced with programming so I would frequently teach my team members the basics of programming so that they could assist me in small ways.

5. Skills and Benefits of working collaboratively
-makes valuable contributions
Example: I have very little skill with programming and after several attempts, I came to understand, no talent with it, so I would spend time that they were programming by advertising the app online and communicating with the NGO about details.

6. Global Engagement
-is able to identify global issues in the local or national community
Example: We realized that excessive use of electricity can be an issue. As Japan can get quite hot we encourage people to use their air conditioners less or at least bring the temperature up by one or two degrees celsius.

-develops awareness and responsibility towards a shared humanity
Example: Without everyone being aware and fighting for the future of the earth, we will not have a future. We believe strongly in spreading awareness about global warming and its harmful effects as well as ways that people can help this dire situation. Morseo than when we began, after doing all the research necessary to create this game, we came to understand that it really is up to us as individuals to all stand up and try to create a less problems for the planet.

•STEP 1 PLANNING AND SUBMITTING CAS PROPOSAL FORM

• Plan to set aside 3-4 hours a week, or more concentrated periods when

•working on a particular project, finishing in April in your last IB year.

• Make an appointment with CAS coordinator to set up your file (on CAS meeting)

• Before you begin an activity, consult with a potential supervisor, add “CAS

•experience” as activity proposal on Managebac .You cannot assume that the activity will count towards CAS; it needs to be approved before the start of the activity.

• The Supervisor must know your plan and the information of supervisor should be filled in activity proposal on managebac. Give all outside school supervisors the “Dear Potential Supervisor” letter that outlines their responsibilities. They must understand that they will be asked to evaluate your performance It is essential that a teacher, coach, adult or the CAS coordinator guide you. A non-teaching adult supervisor needs to be easy to telephone or visit. Family members are NOT accepted as supervisors for their own children.

• Summit proposal as “CAS experience” on managebac. It is important that your CAS file is up-to-date; at a glance, it should be evident which activities are in progress and which have already been completed.

•STEP 2 YOUR REFLECTIONS –

•· Add your reflection after completing every moment that CAS learning outcome occurs. · reflect with 3 paragraphs: description, thinking, evidences of outcomes on each CAS activity you participated in each 5 hours.

•Consider your achievement, difficulties and feelings connected with this activity. Reflections do need to be thoughtful and insightful. Refer to the reflection questions for direction. Photos, videos, audios can also be considered as forms of CAS reflections.

•STEP 3 INTERVIEWS –

•· Be ready with your reflections on managebac up-to-date for CAS interviews

•· As interviews progress have an idea of how your program is fulfilling the 7 CAS

•outcomes
