Nordic Skiing originated in Northern Europe and was introduced as a competitive sport by a Danish-Norwegian general who classified the military skiing style into 4 classes.

Nordic skiing requires skis, poles, boots, and bindings that clip at the toe of the boot and leave the heel free (unlike their cousin, Alpine Skiing, which secures both toe and heel).

There are two kinds of Nordic Skiing. The traditional style is referred to a 'classic', which is more of a walking-gliding motion over snow. The second style, introduced in the 20th century, is called 'freestyle' or 'skate skiing' due to it's similar style and form with ice skating. In seasons where there is no snow, a land based form of Nordic skiing is known as 'roller skiing' in which rollerblade attachments are used with the Nordic boots and bindings.

Nordic skiing can be performed on groomed trails or ungroomed trails.

Alpine - "downhill" or the ski style that is down mountain trails and terrain.

Classic - the traditional style of skiing. Skis are kept parallel and skiers 'run' over the track.

Freestyle - the 'skating' ski style where movement is achieved through weight transfer.

Double poling - poling on both sides while skiing (in freestyle) or poling with both poles quickly to push ahead quickly (in classic).

Kick wax - the special gripping wax applied to the underside of the ski in classic to help the ski 'grip' the snow when transferring to a gliding motion.

Kick zone - the area of the classic ski where kick wax is applied.

Skimiester - A skier who is the best in all fields (nordic classic, nordic freestyle, downhill, slalom, and jumping (when applicable).

V2 - One Skate - The best technique for flats. Poling on both sides. Also referred to as double poling for skate skiing. http://crosscountryskitechnique.com/one-skate-video/

V2 Alternate - Two Skate - The easiest poling style for skate skiing. Poling on only one side before gliding to the alternate ski. http://crosscountryskitechnique.com/two-skate-video/

Double Poling - Classic - Keeping both skis parallel and using the upper body and core to push forward through the poles. http://crosscountryskitechnique.com/double-pole-video/

Kick Double Pole - Classic - A variation of double poling, the skier kicks through the kick zone on one ski as the other leg remains in a glide. The kick leg is alternated. http://crosscountryskitechnique.com/kick-double-pole-video/
