Walter Younger often exhibits a strong sense of ambition. He yearns for a better life and is willing to take risks to achieve it.

A specific scene that shows this is when Walter plans to invest in a liquor store with his friends. Despite the disapproval from his mother and sister, he's resolute about his decision. He sees this as a chance to break away from his current circumstance and provide a better life for his family. His ambition is so strong that he even uses his mother's insurance money, which is intended for Beneatha's education and a new house, to invest in the business. This scene clearly shows Walter's ambitious nature and his willingness to take risks for a chance at a better life.

Walter's ambition also led him to make some reckless decisions. When he invested all the money, her Mama gave him even with the money for Beneatha's education, in the liquor store without considering the risks, he ended up losing everything when his friend ran off with the money. This decision not only cost him his investment but also strained his relationship with his family, showing that unchecked ambition can lead to negative outcomes.

Character Perspective

Walter sees himself as more than just a chauffeur. He believes he's capable of achieving great things and making a better life for his family.

He's not content with just getting by, he wants to thrive. His dreams are a big part of his identity, he feels trapped in his current situation and sees the liquor store as his ticket to financial freedom and respect.

However, Walter's perception of himself often clashes with the reality of his situation. His ambitious nature leads him to make risky decisions, like investing all the insurance money into the liquor store. This shows that while Walter sees himself as a go-getter and risk-taker, his actions often lead to negative consequences for him and his family.

His self-description shows a man full of dreams and ambitions, but his actions reveal a man who struggles to make those dream a reality.

Beneatha's perspective of Walter is quite complex. She sees her older brother as a dreamer with grand ambitions, but she's also highly skeptical of his plans and often criticizes him for his lack of practicality. Like when Walter shares his plan to invest Mama's insurance money into a liquor store, Beneatha is quick to express her doubts. She sarcastically said how Walter had decided to be the head of the family, indicating her disbelief in Walter's ability to lead the family or make decisions for the family.

She believes that Walter's dreams are not only unrealistic but also selfish, as they put the entire family's financial stability at risk.

Furthermore, Beneatha often feels that Walter doesn't respect her own ambitions of becoming a doctor. This lack of mutual understanding and respect further strains their relationship.

Overall, Beneatha's view of Walter is one of skepticism and concern. She sees him as a big dreamer who often fails to consider the practical implication of his actions, and this lead to many disagreements between them through the play.

In my own opinion, I see Walter as a deeply flawed yet sympathetic character. His actions are driven by a desire for a better life for his family, which is respectable.

However, his decision to invest all the insurance money into a risky business venture without consent of his family shows a lack of judgment and consideration for others. This decision not only the family's financial future at risk, but also strain his relationship with his family.

I picked the song "A change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke because the song is basically all about overcoming hardship and hoping for a better future, just like Walter. Walter constantly dreams of a better life and is determined to make it happen.

Walter is a character who faces a lot of struggles in the play, but he never loses hope. He dreams of a better for himself and his family, which he tries to achieve by investing in a liquor store.

This song relates to him because Sam Cooke wrote this song about hope amidst struggle, he sings about the hardships he faced, yet he remains hopeful that change is going to come.

So, the connection lies in the shared theme of enduring hardships with the belief that a better future is possible.
