Hi! I'm Jennifer Ehrlich. I am an elementary education major at UF. I have created this padlet to introduce some diverse texts that you could use with your students. These texts highlight that within racial diversities, we are all still really alike. This is important to teach to kids, because they may just see the superficial racial differences and start to avoid those who are different. This text set shows kids that we are all the same and go through the same things despite our race. I hope you find this resource helpful! Feel free to contact me with any questions at jehrlich1@ufl.edu.
                          Best,
                          Jennifer E.

This text highlights the Latino culture through Esperanza's travels from Mexico to California. Esperanza had to leave her lavish lifestyle in Mexico due to her father's death and move to a migrant worker camp. This text highlights diversity because the book describes the Latino experience in vivid detail, but it also contains universal experiences in that she must adjust to a new life due to moving.
Activity: Have students create a book trailer from Esperanza's point of view. By doing this, student's will understand her feelings and what it was like to be Latino during that time period.

This text highlights the African American culture by describing how Stella's community responded to the KKK. This text highlights diversity by showing the difference in lifestyle between the whites and blacks, but it contains universal experiences because everyone has felt left out or different before.
Activity: Have students make a graffiti board before and after reading. After reading, they can identify any misconceptions they had prior to reading. This will help students recognize stereotypes and prevent them from holding those beliefs any longer.

This text highlights diversity by showing how Anna differs from both her Caucasian classmates and her immigrant Chinese classmates, because she is American-Born Chinese. This text also shows universal experiences, because everyone has trouble fitting in and maintaining friendships.
Activity:Complete one of the interactive exercises in the book with students. These exercises include using tangrams, making a drawstring bag, and cooking won tons. By completing these activities, children will get a better understanding of the Asian American culture.

To implement this text set in a classroom, I would suggest reading some text together and assigning some of it as homework. For example, you could read chapters 1-3 of Esperanza Rising together, then assign 4-5 for homework, and then the next day read 6-10. However, I would suggest summarizing the chapters that were read at home before moving forward, just in case someone did not read. This would continue until all four books were read. When one book is finished, I would conduct the suggested activity, then move on to the next book. When all four books and activities are finished, I would have a "Culture Day", which would consist of children presenting about their culture and bringing in cultural items that represent them (e.g., food, clothes, music, etc.).
