Before the Renaissance children were seen as small adults, they were expected to continue on their family heritage and dealings with no time for the curiosity usually associated with childhood. The average school day during this time period consisted of an adult who didn’t have any formal training in education teaching curriculum based off of biblical lessons. Only those of a certain stratum and race were given the ability to attend school since formal education was thought of as a privilege during this era.

Importance

I believe this event is important because it shows how far we have come as a society in what we believe about the education of children. I think it’s important to show where we came from to understand just how drastically education has changed and improved.

Martin Luther 1483-1546

During the Renaissance, ideas surrounding the education of children changed a great deal and Martin Luther played a big role in the early stages of these changes. Luther suggested the key role of education in children during this time period should be learning to read and that parents have the most important role in educating their children. Luther also played a part in the idea of universal education or the fact that every child should go to school.

Importance

I think this is relevant because Luther helped change the idea that learning would just be listening to an informally trained adult teach about the bible and proposed the idea that all children should learn to read. As well as the fact that he contributed to the idea that all children need to be educated and that still stands to this day.

John Locke 1632-1714

John Locke was a great philosopher with many great theories that helped towards the education of children. Locke brought forward the idea of tabula rasa which means clean slate or that children are not born good or evil but rather neutral. Locke also believed that the education for children should be enjoyable and have lots of activities involving play while also having drills which involved very disciplined practice.

Importance

I think the concepts that John Locke brought forth are important because we still use the concept of education through activities involving play for young children in education today.

Jean Jacques Rousseau 1712-1778

Jean Jacques Rousseau authored a book titled “Emile” that entailed some key concepts such as the idea that children build their own knowledge and that children have different perspectives than those of adults. Also, children's cognitive development advances in various distinct stages and the education they are receiving should coincide with these stages.

Importance

I believe the theories of Jean Jacques Rousseau are important because we still take into consideration today that children have different perspectives than adults. As well as the fact that children’s minds develop in stages and that is part of the reason why to this day we separate different age groups into different grades where they will learn developmentally appropriate lessons.

Friedrich Froebel 1782-1852

Friedrich Froebel was the visionary behind kindergarten which he originally designed for children from 3 to 6 years old. He believed that play was crucial for children to develop self-regulation. Froebel also thought the role of the teacher was to enable learning experiences through enjoyable activities that provide ideas and materials for children to learn from.

Importance

I believe Froebel’s contributions are important because although the age range has differed since his original idea we still have kindergarten where children learn through enjoyable activities hundreds of years later which shows a very lasting impact.

Horace Mann 1796-1859

Horace Mann was an early education reformer. Mann fostered the idea of universal and impartial education and believed in the importance of training educators to enhance the quality of their teaching abilities.

Importance

I believe Horace Mann’s work is important because although it may seem like only three things, they are three very big things. We still believe in the concepts of universal and equitable education. As well as training educators to further their teaching knowledge which I feel is very important.

Rachel McMillan 1859-1917 Margaret McMillan 1860-1931

Rachel and Margaret McMillan started a school catered towards the children living in the London slums. They also spearheaded the nursery school movement which focused on a play-centered approach to education. At their school they provided meals, hygiene, and medical attention for their students. They also petitioned for the 1906 provision of school meals act.

Importance

I believed the McMillan sisters' work was important because we still do the things they pioneered at their school. We still provide meals for children in school as well as a nurses office and basic hygiene needs.

Patty Smith Hill 1868-1946

Patty Hill was the founder of the National Associate for Nursery Education (NANE) which developed into what we know today as the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Importance

Patty Hills’ work was and still is a very important aspect in the education of young children. She developed the outline for how we should educate the youth. I feel this is very important since it is nationally recognized to be important.
