Students having parents that are the same sex may be seen as needing extra support. They not only need support from the parents, but the teachers as well. Research suggests that the "development adjustment, and well-being of children with lesbian and gay parents do not differ markedly from that of children with heterosexual parents" (apa.org). Students with homosexual parents may be very reserved and to themselves, not wanting to engage due to the fear of being made fun of for being different. When a students has a home-life that differs from their peers, they may have a harder time focusing at school.

Treating them the same. It is a fact that teachers should be able to treat students with equity. However, students that have homosexual parents want to feel safe and welcomed at school. Giving them special treatment that puts them on the spot, might make them feel more uncomfortable than they already were. Make sure the classroom is truly a safe space and not allow any bad language. Being aware of language in general is important. Not saying "mom and dad" to the students but referring to them as parents instead.

Extending classroom recognition of diversity. Teachers should not only promote diversity in the classroom based on culture, race, religion, etc. Diversity should also be taught and recognized in the classroom in regards to gender and sexuality. Teachers should have an inclusive curriculum!

The Human Rights Campaign website is an amazing resource for parents because the author of that page, Ruti Kadish, is a homosexual parent. Her concerns are the same as those thousands of parents who are just like her, worried about how their children will be in school. An awesome statement that Kadish makes is "while we might have little control over what happens at school, we do have the ability to do a great deal - both emotionally and practically- to support our children..." She goes on to give parents advice on how they can talk to their children.
