Healthy Relationship with Tech KEY POINTS

3-5 key points I learned from the resources reviewed

I had never heard of the term 'digital pacifier.' It does make sense, especially when I think about the way technology has been made available to children, and how it seems to sooth and calm them. Technology has been a resource to make boredom go away.

I learned that Snapchat is the #1 social media platform used by teenagers and about its feature that shows how long you've been keeping in touch with your "friends."

I also learned about apps that can assist me in staying focused and blocking digital distractions. I looked up Forest but ended up downloading Flora, which seems to have similar features but it is free.

Resources worth checking out

The following (2-3) resources were really valuable and I will return to them in the future.

I liked Dino Ambrosi's research and talk. It would be really valuable to have students hear someone like him show the results of his studies. Youth are definitely more likely to listen when the message comes from someone they can relate to. I will save this link to a presentation or slide deck that I want to share with my soon-to-be middle schooler, who has been begging for a cell phone.

I've watched 'The Social Dilemma,' but I think it's worth watching again. This time, I want to do it with my daughter.

I recently found a podcast called "Healthy Screen Habits." Hillary Wilkinson, the host, is a parent and an educator. She often invites specialists to her podcast. I like how she educates parents, educators, and youth. We all need to learn how to balance the use of technology in our lives, rather than eliminate it. Here's a link to the Healthy Screen Habits website:https://www.healthyscreenhabits.org/tools

Nearpod d also has good educational content and assessments on social media awareness: https://nearpod.com/t/search?q=social%20media&g=1&s=1

1 Week Tech Challenge

To create a healthier relationship with tech, for the next week I will:

This week, I will track my "screen time" and share it here later on. I tend to keep my phone away most of the time, and I am not into social media. However, I do love to binge on Netflix off of my iPhone...

I'm back to report on my screen time. I was hoping to download the images here but it looks like I may only be able to upload a "header" to this topic. My average screen time is 40m, which added to about 4h46m for the week. I changed phones on Thursday/ Friday so that may explain why there's so much time on Settings. Last week I was at my family's cabin, which is the perfect place to unplug. When I am home, I have to say I get more distracted with my phone and connect more regularly with my family and friends back home.

I will download the app Flora, which seems to be similar to Forest. It appears that I can use it to connect with others who are also studying. I need to find focus to study for the CSET.

I was able to use Flora twice to study. I didn't think I was going to pick up the phone but I had to give it a try. I will use it more in the future when I am trying to focus at home.
