Act I, Scene 5 centers around the characterization of Lady Macbeth as a power-hungry and manipulative woman and Macbeth as an easily influenced but ambitious man. In the scene Lady Macbeth asks "spirits, come/unsex me here", ultimately rejecting her femininity in order to "stop up the passage to remorse" (I, 5, 24). At this scene, Shakespeare emphasizes Lady Macbeth's rejection of her femininity and desire to be unfeeling in order for her downfall later in the play to be more ironic and impactful for an audience. This use of foreshadowing and irony sets the stage for the relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth as well as their eventual downfall. Although a tragic character, Lady Macbeth is seen as the architect of her own demise, and the traditional roles of women are reaffirmed through the consequences that she experiences. The themes of gender and power are paramount in this scene. In order to emphasis these themes I have chosen to set this new adaption in a dystopian future characterized by strict gender expectations. In this setting, women are the political rulers of society while the men are simply seen as brute strength and providers. I feel that by setting Macbeth in this context, Lady Macbeth's political prowess can be emphasised, but will still require her to desire a more masculine physical strength in order to complete the murder of King Duncan (who I have changed to a female character). Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are nobility at the start of the play but need to ascend in power. The setting for this part of the play needs to indicate that they are in a dystopian future while giving them room to move to a more lavish set when they become King and Queen. In addition to this, the use of a simple set keeps scene changes and the movement of actors practical and seamless. The general design of the set (see the annotated image on the right) allows for an emphasis on the themes of power and gender relationships through the use of domestic and professional furniture. For example, the desk will be symbolic of Lady Macbeth's desire for power and when she reads the letter from her husband and when she discusses the murder with him she will be sitting behind or on top of the desk. When Lady Macbeth embraces her husband upon his return they will be seated on the simple couch symbolizing their uncomfortable and unbalanced domestic relationship. Additionally, the use of LED lighting from the screens upstage and center stage left and right will provide an easily changed backdrop for the interior (the two center stage screens) and the exterior (upstage), and will serve to enhance not distract from the play itself while clearly placing the setting of the play in a dystopian future. The lights from the exterior image and the downlights in the theater will project an orange/yellow lighting to contrast with the blue lighting that will be used later in the play to symbolise the change in the fortunes of the characters. As such costuming choices such as hair, makeup clothing and accessories must communicate the desired characterization of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. As a woman of power, Lady Macbeth will be dressed in a streamlined professional outfit with short structured hair. Simple but professional hair and makeup (such as in the image to the right) will convey Lady Macbeth's ambition while allowing for a dramatic change by the end of the play to signify her downfall. Some slightly exaggerated features such as shoulder pads and sharp angles added to her costume will situate her within the dystopian context while remaining relevant to a modern audience. Lady Macbeth's costume should be a pantsuit or similar to signify her desire for masculine power. Her clothing should be white (see image to the image to the right) to convey a link with the spiritual while making the actress stand out on stage. In order to convey Macbeth's role as a military man as well as his subservience to Lady Macbeth, his costuming should be muted compared to hers. In comparison to Lady Macbeth, Macbeth's costume should be tattered and muted to convey that he has just entered from the battlefield. He must be accessorized with combat boots and weaponry to illustrate the source of his power- military strength. As a nod to the original play, Macbeth should have a tartan  sash or scarf (see right). These choice to introduce Macbeth in a military uniform of muted colours serve to situate him in comparison to his wife and allow for an easier characterisation of the couples reverse in fortune when he they become King and Queen as well as when they loose power. These choices in costuming indicate to an audience the source of each character's power and strength; Lady Macbeth's ambition and Macbeth's violence. These choices also allow for contrast later in the play as they gain and lose their power. Characterisation is vital for any play, particularly such an iconic scene.
