This workshop addresses the risks and challenges that today's youth face as they use technology and social media from a special guest speaker Robin Batten who is the Program Director for Washtenaw Area
Council for Children. The topics included for part 1 will cover bullying, digital reputation, and sexting. Parents will walk away with an increased awareness of youth online life and tips for supporting their children's
well-being and online safety. Helpful resources will also be provided.

Since 1998, NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) has operated the CyberTipline, a place where the public and electronic service providers can report suspected online and offline child sexual exploitation. The millions of reports made each year uniquely situate NCMEC to identify trends and create prevention resources to address the evolving needs of kids and teens online.

NetSmartz is NCMEC's online safety education program. It provides age-appropriate videos and activities to help teach children be safer online with the goal of helping children to become more aware of potential online risks and empowering them to help prevent victimization by making safer choices on- and offline.

From smartphones and social media to TV and tablet-based toys, today’s kids are constantly inundated by technology. While it’s important for children and teens to develop an aptitude for technology, after all, they will use computers their whole lives, too much technology use can have detrimental health and physical effects. The negative effects on children’s health run the gamut from increased risk of obesity to loss of social skills and behavioral problems. Of course, this doesn’t mean parents need to ban technology entirely, but it’s important for parents to be aware of the potential effects of technology on children and develop strategies to limit their children’s screen time.
