The movie starts off with Marie Antoinette being transferred to France from Austria where France operates under the Estates General, which has three estates. The Third and lowest estate consists of commoners who make up the majority of the population and pay all the high taxes which leaves them struggling for money. They use sawdust as flour because of the nobles using the flour to whiten their hair. The Second estate consists of nobles, they don't have to and won't pay taxes. They're ten-percent of the population and enjoy spending their time enjoying luxuries and parties. The First estate is one-percent of the population, and just like the Second estate they don't pay taxes and just spend their time luxuriously. Each estate had one vote that created a relatively unfair system so, the Third estate created the National Assembly which had voting based on the estate's population to combat this issue. The First and Second estate didn't like this as it restricted their power and they wouldn't get their way anymore as the Third estate was the majority.

Toward the middle of this segment, the luxurious ways of life that the upper estates led are being shown off. However, they're combated with various occasional scenes of the ways that the Third estate led their lives in the ever-growing poverty. However, this part would also feature parts of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette bonding and building their relationship.

At the end, one particular scene would be much longer than the rest of the scenes showing the poor. It would demonstrate the people's unrest as the commoners gather together in order to create the Tennis Court Oath. It was made because they were locked out of the National Assembly, and they swore to not disband until a new constitution was written for the Free people of France.

The tone of the movie drastically changes in the middle section from being full of light-hearted oblivious luxury to violence. The first scene is that of luxury, it would be some sort of noble event where everyone besides the Third estate is having fun as they party because the commoners were never invited.

Also, Marie's line of "let them eat cake" would appear with her lounging around and commenting something about her never saying it while the necklace she was accused of trying to get for free would appear just a bit later on.

However, the scene quickly changes into one filled with violence, fire, and destruction. The Third Estate storms the Bastille, with the king's betrayal towards his own people they felt as if their rights were infringed due to being locked out of the National Assembly, and they were afraid that it would dissolve.

The march on the Palace of Versailles quickly follows. The women were upset as they marched, accusing Marie Antoinette of hoarding all the wheat and blamed her for spending money on parties. Their actions were justified, they just wanted to be as equal as the other estates, and not suffer in poverty, or deal with the horrifyingly high taxes.

The King and Queen are taken away and have to create a new government, the legislative government. It functioned as a Constitutional Monarchy where the idea was to make the people and King happy, but it was weak. However, France had also never seen a government that was a monarchy before, so this was extremely new to them.

The end of the legislative brings the First Republic or Reign of Terror. It also brought the death of the King and Queen, both of them were sentenced to the guillotine after they attempted to counter-revolt. This government was led by Robespierre, who began to kill anyone against the revolution. However, the goal of the First Republic was to provide a republic that supported the people.

In the end, Robespierre gets executed and overthrown for his dictatorship that killed 70,000 as he gained more and more power for himself.

The scenes would generally depict violence with some bloodshed and lots of rioting. The people were extremely upset and the nobility would be generally fearful and unsure as they get more and more violent.

At the end, Napoleon takes control. However, the Directory precedes him. It consisted of two houses, the lower house would make the laws while the upper house would approve or deny them. The Directory also struggled, the people began to lose hope in it and Napoleon quickly overthrows it.

Napoleon was a major general who stages a coup d'état that overthrows the directory. He proceeds to name himself consul for life where a coronation scene would appear.

Napoleon brought many changes to France besides becoming consul. The first of many is his Napoleonic Codes, they reintroduce slavery, made men the household leaders and stripped every woman of her rights. He also allowed for freedom of religion, letting people not be secretive over what their true religion is if it defies any previous law. Eliminating the Estates General and centralizing France's government are another two of his feats. It eliminated the source of inequality within France and any other form of rule besides Napoleon and his family. Napoleon also had educational reforms which allowed for the citizens of France to be more knowledgeable, and he also sold the Louisiana Purchase to further expand France.

Napoleon's legacy allowed France to control Continental Europe. He also gave his family power in the conquered nations, for example, his brother becoming King of Spain. It also introduced new political ideas like being liberal, supporting new methods and democracy, and being conservative, supporting the old way and the monarchy.
