Be honest about the journey so far. Sometimes we might give the impression that once you are a Christian everything will be alright, but the reality is that sometimes it is really difficult, share your personal journeys with Christ so far; the highs and the lows and the in-betweens.

AD60) by one of the first followers of Jesus called Paul; (before he became a follower of Jesus, Saul (as he was previously known) persecuted Christians as he felt they were a danger to the state and more importantly heretical, therefore offensive to God.) After his conversion he travelled to many places to tell people about Jesus Christ, one of these places was a Philippi, where he helped plant a church. Paul was writing this letter from prison (because he had upset the authorities by saying that Jesus was God rather than Caesar) to thank the Philippians for their support of him and to encourage this new church to get to know Jesus better and to be more like him in everything they did.

Many Bibles (especially study bibles) have useful information in them about each book, such as information about when, by and to whom and why each book was written, some even list the major themes and other items of interest including maps and charts.

It is intended specifically for new Christians or for those who feel God is calling them to walk closer to him...

The Holy Bible or Bible is known by Bible scholars as the ‘canon’ of scripture that they believe God through the Holy Spirit and with the willingness of human writers set these books down for us to learn from and to become more like Jesus himself. See 2 Timothy 3 v 16 & 17

This journey is not intended so that you can just tick the box that you have attended the course, or 'done' basic Christianity just so that you are a 'proper' Christian (whatever that means!!)

Journey Companions: It is intended that you make this conversational journey with at least one or preferably two people who have been active followers of Christ for a while longer than you, who can guide you rather than teach you as you travel through this book.

They are not there to tell you what to do rather be a companion, they will learn a lot too!

HERE are some hints for the journey

TAKE your time STOP at any point that suits you and your timing, YOU CAN STOP WHERE YOU WANT TO!
ASK your own questions or just follow the suggested questions,
SAFE: You will probably find that you are more comfortable with asking deeper questions the more you get to know and
TRUST each other.
EASY does it: Please don't rush through, trying to answer everything, feeling you have to answer all the questions and by completing them all you have somehow made it...THAT WILL NOT HELP!

MARINADE: Let each verse & passage soak in, allowing it to speak to you personally. (this was a phrase that the first person who did ‘Conversational Journeys’ with came up with to describe this process and we thought it was brilliant!)

Don’t be afraid to fail: As you grow in your faith you will: change, be challenged and fail, BUT you will: get back up again and grow.

From time to time, you will feel far away from God, this is perfectly normal, and at other times you will feel remarkably close but be sure of this "Christ will never leave you or forsake you." He wants this relationship MUCH MUCH more than you do, and he will move heaven and earth so that you can grow closer to him.

So, journey with us this path through the glorious book of Philippians that many other pilgrims have trod and enjoy the journey..................

BEFORE you finish your time together each session, book yourself another time to continue the journey together.
THIS IS VITAL: When you have completed the journey decide what you will do next. We recommend that you form or join a small discipleship group that meets regularly and that will help you grow as a Christian.

The grim reality is that our sin does that and what is worse it totally separates us from God. We are without HOPE, HOPELESS in fact.

BUT our wonderful rescuer God refuses to leave us there alone. He himself, through Jesus Christ, wants to rescue you from all that, in fact he serves that death sentence for you, he pays the full price for you, not because you deserve it or because of anything you have done or own but simply and wonderfully because he loves you. REMARKABLE - That is grace!!

For many it became a religious practice. But here it appears that the Philippians had given above and beyond to support, encourage and bless Paul.
Our culture tends to think of giving out of our surplus but the Bible tends to explain that you re order your expenditure to ensure that God gets his fair share rather than the loose change. But as this passage tells God always blesses those who bless.
This is not to be mistaken for reckless giving putting yourself in need or in debt but rather encouraging us to manage the resources that God gives us wisely .

Being a disciple of Christ does echo the brilliance of that Carry on regardless mentality of post war Britain, in that we do need to carry on relentlessly pursuing Christ as Lord of our lives.
Jesus was asked by someone who thought they already knew the answer but who were trying to knock him of course, 'what is the greatest commandment?' Quoting the great Hebrew prayer of 'Shema', Jesus answered 'Love the Lord you God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and with all your spirit' but he then requoted another verse from Deuteronomy; '....love your neighbour as yourself' adding these two are of equal importance.
