Essay

Two characteristics of a valid, scientific, public
opinion poll are random sampling and sample. Polls rely on a sample of the
population, a relatively small proportion of people who are chosen to represent
the whole. The accuracy of opinion poll is the technique of random sampling,
which operates on the principle that everyone should have an equal probability of
being selected as part of the sample.

Strong public opinions as expressed in polling results
enhance the influence of public opinion on certain subjects can influence how
people vote for their politicians. Members of Congress need to be sensitive to
these opinions and polling results if they want to remain in Congress.
Competitive re-elections enhance the influence of public opinion when popular
candidates run for presidency their campaigns provide enough momentum to help
elect someone of their party’s congressional candidates who otherwise would not
be elected. When elections are competitive changing parties Congress members
can vote the way the President would want them to vote, if the President is not
popular than Congress members have to be very careful on how they vote.

Legislators’ voting records limits the influence of
public opinion if a member of Congress votes a certain way most of the time the
public opinion usually does not change the decisions that that the Congress
person is going to make. Many times they vote according to party loyalty and do
not pay attention to public polls. Party Leadership limits the influence of
public opinion when members of Congress tend to vote according to their party leadership
even at times when the polls show otherwise.
