A pulmonary function test, also known as a lung function test, is a medical procedure that involves an evaluation of the patient's respiratory system. This test is used to assess the function of lung capacity as well as the lung and chest wall mechanics. The pulmonary function test procedure also includes a review of the patient's medical history, a chest x-ray, and an arterial blood gas analysis to determine whether or not the patient has a respiratory disease.

The lung function tests gauge:

The amount of air you can take into the lungs

The amount of air you can blow out of your lungs and the speed with which you can do it

The efficiency with which the lungs deliver oxygen to the blood.

Muscle strength in the respiratory muscles

Call Dr. Parthiv Shah | Pulmonologist in Mumbai - 9029772904

This procedure is used to determine how much air you can breathe in and out of your lungs. Spirometry can measure the speed with which air can be blown out of the lungs as well as the amount of air exhaled.

Body Plethysmography: This procedure determines how much air is present in the lungs when you take a deep breath. The test also measures the volume of air remaining in the lungs after completely exhaling.

Lung Diffusion Capacity: This test determines how successfully your lungs transfer oxygen into your bloodstream.

Call Dr. Parthiv Shah | Pulmonologist in Mumbai - 9029772904

The most frequent PFT test, spirometry, involves the patient breathing through a mouthpiece. This mouthpiece is linked to a spirometer, which monitors the volume of air you breathe and the pace at which you breathe over time. Depending on the nature of the measurement, you may be requested to breathe normally or forcefully with forced inhalation and exhalation.

Patients are instructed to breathe through a mouthpiece while being seated in a clear, enclosed box for body plethysmography. The fluctuation in pressure within the chamber is used to calculate lung volume. Another method for doing this lung function test is for the patient to breathe helium or nitrogen gas via a tube. This tube is connected to a chamber in which the concentration of helium or nitrogen gas is monitored in order to calculate the capacity of the lungs.

Patients are asked to breathe in a harmless gas, commonly known as a tracer gas, for a single breath to test lung diffusion capacity. The quantity of gas exhaled by the patient is measured, and the difference between the amounts of gas inhaled and expelled is calculated. This distinction enables physicians to measure how efficiently oxygen is transferred from the lungs to the bloodstream.

Call Dr. Parthiv Shah |Pulmonologist in Mumbai- 9029772904

Oxygen therapy is a treatment that provides you with extra oxygen to breathe in. It is also called supplemental oxygen. It is only accessible with a prescription from your doctor. Some people only need it for a short period of time. Others will need continuous oxygen treatment.

There are several devices that can provide you with oxygen. Some use tanks of liquid or gas oxygen. Others utilize an oxygen concentrator, which draws oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere. The oxygen will be delivered to you through a nasal tube (cannula), a mask, or a tent. The additional oxygen is inhaled with normal air.

There are portable versions of the tanks and oxygen concentrators. They can make it easier for you to move around while using your therapy.

Call Dr. Parthiv Shah | Pulmonologist in Mumbai - 9029772904

This will contain the flow rate or the amount of oxygen required per minute. It is essential that you follow all of your doctor’s specific instructions. If you don’t think the oxygen therapy is working for you, see them before making any changes.

Some individuals only use oxygen while they are active or sleeping. Other people need oxygen on a daily basis. Most methods of oxygen treatment include portable oxygen tanks, allowing you to leave home with them if required.

Do not use drugs or alcohol while receiving oxygen treatment since they might cause breathing problems. This test determines how difficult it is for a patient to expel air (called airflow obstruction). Your doctor will also ask you about your symptoms, how many moderate to severe flare-ups you've experienced, and if you have any other chronic disorders.

COPD patients are also categorized into four groups: A, B, C, and D.

Plain HRCT (High-Resolution Computed Tomography) refers to a CT scan that produces a more exact cross-section image of the lungs than a standard chest CT. An HRCT scan of the chest is an imaging process that employs narrow X-ray beams to provide a high-resolution picture of the lung structure. This test is used to evaluate lung function, identify abnormal growth in the lungs, and discover obstructions to airflows through the lungs.

Before the test, the patient is asked to remove any jewelry and accessories from the chest region that might interfere with the scan. Pregnant women should notify their doctor since the radiation may harm the fetus. They facilitate the passage of air into and out of your lungs. Your doctor may prescribe them to you on a daily basis to reduce or avoid your symptoms.

Bronchodilators are medications that relax the muscles that surround your airways. The relaxed muscles allow the airways to move. They also make it easier for mucus to pass through the airways.

COPD is a chronic, progressive respiratory illness that encompasses chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory asthma, which does not respond to therapy.

Persistent bronchitis is characterised by chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which enable air to enter and exit the lungs. Coughing and the production of excessive volumes of mucus are symptoms of inflammation. It is most often caused by smoking cigarettes, although it may also be caused by long-term exposure to irritants and hazardous substances in the air.

Emphysema develops for the same reasons as chronic bronchitis when the small air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs are damaged, making the alveoli less able to absorb oxygen.

Refractory asthma is a disorder that occurs when asthma symptoms persist after therapy.

There are numerous treatment options available depending on the severity of your pneumothorax:

Observation: For minor lung collapse, your condition will be observed with a series of chest X-rays, which will normally be done in the hospital. You may need the usage of supplementary oxygen. After a week or two, the air may be reabsorbed and your lung returns to normal.

Needle or chest tube insertion:

If your lung collapse is severe or air continues to escape, a needle or a chest tube is introduced to remove the air.

Minimally invasive surgical treatment: If the needle or chest tube effectively removes the air, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) may be required to close the leak, especially if it is a recurring issue. A small telescope is inserted, and the air leak is stapled closed. You should take rest after surgery.

For more information, consult Dr. Parthiv Shah one of the best Chest physician in Borivali

A peak flow meter is a simple device that measures a patient's 'Peak Expiratory Flow' or 'PEF.' The PEF is a measurement of how quickly you can forcefully exhale after fully inhaling. The regular collection of a patient's PEF can aid in determining whether the patient's airways are narrowing. Asthmatic patients commonly use the device to help keep their asthma under control. PEF testing can be used to detect potential asthma attacks early when symptoms appear to be worsening or to help determine whether recovery medication is required.

For more information, consult Dr. Parthiv Shah one of the best Lung specialist in Borivali.

Chest X-rays can detect the condition in newborns.

CCAMs are most often seen on normal prenatal ultrasounds. They appear as white masses with occasional small dark circles. The circles are fluid-filled cysts. Because some CCAMs are fatal, physicians will constantly monitor your fetus.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are often used as first-line treatments in youngsters. These treatments allow the airway behind the nose and palate to be opened. If a tongue limitation is found, it may be necessary to perform a lingual frenectomy treatment to correct the growth of the upper and lower jaws. Positive airway pressure (PAP) and MAD are not often used since they may interfere with the development of the upper and lower jaws; the use of PAP or MAD is determined on a case-by-case basis.

In adults, the first-line treatment option for OSA is behavioral change, such as weight reduction and sleeping position adjustment, as well as PAP therapy. When administered on a regular basis, PAP therapy is the gold standard for OSA treatment. However, some patients are unable to endure PAP treatment owing to claustrophobia, nasal or pharyngeal airway blockage, mask and hose discomfort, and excessive positive pressure. Patients who have not responded to PAP therapy are assessed for additional treatment alternatives.

For more information, consult Dr. Parthiv Shah the Best Chest physician in Dahisar.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a term used to describe a condition in which a person's breathing becomes obstructed during sleeping. Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep breathing disease characterized by repeated collapse of the airway during sleep, resulting in waking. A sleep study records the frequency of airway collapse (apnea/hypopnea index or AHI) and the amount of oxygen in the blood.

OSA is diagnosed in children when the AHI is more than 1. OSA is linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), irritability, and poor focus and academic performance.

The sleep study in adults is assessed as follows: normal AHI 0-5, mild AHI 5-15, moderate AHI 15-30, and severe AHI >30.
