George, on the other hand, is considered "better than average", so they think he needs to be brought down to be equal with everyone else. In the story, it is shown how this actually makes the characters miserable and unable to function as they normally would. The author shows us how the person without the handicap thinks everything is great, whereas the person with the handicap actually finds it somewhat unfair.

Sure the earpiece made things hard and the weights would hurt at times, but he felt that if he were to not have them, the dark times would come again and he does not want anyone to feel bad for not being as smart or strong as he is.

Hazel is not handicapped because she is already average. "Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn't think about anything except in short bursts." (Pg. 299) Since she is at society's ideal level of intelligence, talent, and strength, she does not need anything to weigh her down. George believes that handicaps are good things, even though they are painful and distracting. "It was such a doozy that George was white and trembling, and tears stood on the rim of his red eyes." (Pg. 300) This passage shows how much the handicaps scare and harm George, but when Hazel talks about how tired he looks, he refuses to rest his bag of lead balls. He explains that without the handicaps, society would go back to the "dark ages."

"Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn't think about anything except in short burst." (Pg. 299) "And George, while his intelligence was way above normal," (Pg. 299) Hazel just meets the standards of where everyone should be at. George seems to be ok with the handicaps, he even seems to think they are good things. But also, he believes they are painful and distracting because his hearing aids that distracts his thinking make a loud, ear piercing noise. But, he thinks they are a good thing because they keep the society out of another "dark age". This develops on page 300 and 301 when Hazel tells George to lay down after a painful noise in his hearing aids and they discuss the situation of handicaps and their affects on the society.

"Hazel had perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn't think about anything except in short bursts." "Hazel had perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn't think anything except in short bursts." (Vonnegut, Page 299) George, on the other hand, has intelligence that is above average. From what text there is about George, it can be said the he neither likes nor dislikes the handicaps. They are just there, an unavoidable aspect of life that he's become accustomed to. "I don't notice them anymore. It's just a part of me." (Vonnegut, Page 301) George also seems quite apprehensive about the idea of ridding himself of handicaps because of the possible punishment that could come along with it and the way removing handicaps could disrupt society and his way of life.

On the other hand, George has better and more developed physical and mental qualities than the average person would have. The author develops that George has handicaps for those reasons in ways of describing how he feels and the physical qualities of the devices devising him to equality. On page 301, the author explains that George is more tired and wants to lay down from his sack of led balls around his neck. But, also on that page it states that he doesn't particulary like the way his handicaps feel on his body, but if he did not have them, the country would be in its dark ages again.

On the other hand george has to have handicaps because he has a high level of intelligence and this has to be restricted so all people stay equal. He seems to be content with the handicaps, because he has had them for so long they have just become a part of his life ("I don't notice it anymore, its just a part of me" page 301). He can't finish thinking or remember lots because of the device in his ear that plays noises to distract him every once and a while, which would become annoying and difficult to deal with.

Hazel is not handicapped because she is "perfectly average" (299). Her physical abilities do not surpass that of anyone else, as with her intelligence. She is also not considered beautiful, and therefore is not required to wear a hideous mask. George on the other hand, has a far above average intelligence, and therefore has a transmitter in his ear that sends out a sharp noise every 20 seconds to stop whatever above average thinking George may have been doing (George also has a 47 pound bag around his neck, but this is not stressed as much as the transmitter). George feels as though his handicap is necesarry to keep society out of the "dark ages", but as the story progresses, he appears to become more annoyed with his handicap. There are subtle hints in the text that hint at George seeing his handicap for what it really is, such as his short, "'You can say that again', " comment on page 305.

Hazel does not have handicaps because she is "normal" while George does. Hazel isn't smart, and forgets things very quickly, so she doesn't need a device to keep her from thinking. On page 300, Hazel says "Who knows better'n I do what normal is?" Hazel is thankful that she doesn't need handicaps, especially because she sees her husband suffering from his. George has an earpiece that keeps him from thinking more than a few seconds, because it makes him forget what he was thinking about. He also must wear 75 pounds around his neck. Although the earpiece and weight hurt him, George believes that it is fair. He agrees that it is right that he must wear these handicaps. On page 301, "I don't mind it" about the weight that he must carry. Then, he says about if everyone took off their handicaps that "we'd be right back to the dark ages again". So George keeps them on, not even allowing himself to rest while watching TV. The author shows both Hazel and George's opinion on the way their society works, then tells us about Harrison and how differently he sees things.

George however, had both a transmitter in his ear, and a neck brace. The ear transmitter blasts a noise into his ear every few seconds so that he forgets what he was thinking about. This is because his mental intelligence is higher than normal. The neck brace has many tiny lead balls inside it. Hazel is glad she doesn't have handicaps like George does. George does not like his handicaps, but says he is used to them and feels they are needed for a stable society. When Hazel suggests taking a few lead balls out,George says he doesn't mind it, and that without them "we'd go right back to the dark ages again". George believes that the handicaps are fair and needed, even though they hurt him.

George feels his handicaps are a nuisance, but important to keep society equal. He said if he cheated and tried to get away with it so would other people and soon they'd be back to the 'dark ages' of competition (301). The author develops this through George's refusal to take out a few led balls of his handicap. The goal of this short story is to create a society that contains nothing but equality. George is more agile, stronger, and smarter than Hazel. This makes his handicaps brutal and painful so he is in line with the rest of the people. George feels that his handicaps although annoying are something normal and expected for the benefit of society. Kurt Vonegutt develops the handicaps by showing the variety of people. He also shows this in his writing with the descriptions of the handicaps and the thoughts about them.

Harrison Bergeron doesn't consider the flaw within it's story. How do you determine the perfect average person to represent how everyone should be? You cant really but in this essence Hazel would be considered perfectly average. She is the baseline on how everyone should be. Hazel isn't burden with handicaps because she has no talents and qualities better than others. However George, Hazel's husband has handicaps. The reason for his handicaps is because he has above average intelligence and strength. An ear piece emits noises to discourage thinking from George and weights prevent his strength from showing. George most likely hates his handicaps but indulging in that idea would be meat with intense noises followed by forgetfulness. The author explains each handicap a person has and why they have it throughout the storyline. The explanation of each handicap is the authors way of developing the story as a whole.
