August 21, 2023

Writing to our friends, family and instructor

With your friends it would be more casual language and with your parents it would be more formal, you would not text them to tell them you would do it in person. If telling your instructor, it would be in an email it would be formal and concise - not much slang used.

Our purpose for writing would be to accept it and support it, shouldn't be negative.

For friends short with simple phrases and maybe more fun details. Parents would need an explanation with a story behind it.While telling our instructor the language would be a bit more formal, with full sentences, correct punctuation and good grammar.

Writing to inform the people around us and update them on our lives. We hope to gain their support and approval.

August 21, 2023 Hedging language | Reasons hedging language used
“We think crows are smart, but what do we really know” | I think this is a very direct use of language intended to show uncertainty in your conclusion. It eliminates the blame factor of their data not being 100% correct
“think” | The writer uses this language to act as a buffer in case the information is inaccurate.
“heard” | The word “heard” allows the person saying the statement to redirect the truthfulness of the statement to someone else.
“but” | The author says this as an alternative to say this has a chance of the statement being incorrect.
