Jeremy, a grade 7 student, seems to have trouble focusing during conversations, read-alouds, and discussions. You notice he seems drawn to the class lava lamp, the window, or new visuals on the walls. He is rapt with attention during videos or hands-on activities. He used to ask you to repeat questions but lately has attempted answers without knowing the question. In what ways might you proactively support this student's learning?

Sayed is a grade 10 student. His locker is overflowing with loose sheets, old work, materials from home, etc. He has a habit of biting his pencil and shredding paper all around his desk. He is always misplacing materials. Homework is rarely done. Another teacher who works with him in a different subject says in the staffroom, "He just doesn't want to do any work!" How would you explain your understanding about executive functioning, particularly related to students with ADHD? What suggestions do you have for this colleague about how they might support this student's learning?

Callie is a great student - you consider her an out of the box, creative thinker who makes insightful connections, especially for Gr. 8. Where she struggles is to express her ideas in writing and staying on top of long-term assignments. She writes her agenda with 30% accuracy so frequently misses pieces of work. Most recently, she forgot to return the pizza form and so doesn't have lunch. Every time something like this happens, she uses self-defeating language and is on the verge of tears. What might you put in place to help Callie?

Leeza (Gr. 11) is new to the school. She is trying to fit in and make friends in the class. Despite best intentions, she has difficulty filtering thoughts and so is quick to point out when someone loses, when they've said something she considers "dumb". "It just comes out of my mouth!" She laments. She is always last to be chosen for groups and you can see peers moving away from her at lunch and snack. What plan might you develop to support Leeza?

Sascha (Gr. 12) has lots to say during classes, frequently interrupting to share an idea. He is well-liked in the class. During group work, he chats about other topics and some peers have come to you privately to raise their concern about working with him. He is also lost during independent work, particularly projects and will sit, staring at the paper for an entire work period. What supports might help Sascha to achieve greater success in independent and group work?
