A major theme in the Kite Runner and Afghanistan is the superiority and dominance of Pashtuns in Afghan society. This is a major moment in Afghanistan history because it was the first time a minority (non-Pashtun) political group came to power. This political party made up of non-Pashtuns included Hazaran people. The group that is constantly marginalized in the Kite Runner. Rabbani was eventually forced into exile by the Taliban. He would be assassinated in 2011 by a suicide bomber.

When Amir returns he sees how much his home has changed. At one point Amir witnesses a man and woman being stoned. This seen impacted Amir because it showed that his home was not his home anymore. This article also describes the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan which caused Amir's family to leave in the first place.
