His importance started when he made two statues of St. Mark and St. George. After he made these sculptures he continued creating many more sculptures to decorate the city of Florence. When he reached the 1420's and 1430's he was making his sculptures more high end, using marble and famously creating the sculpture called The Ascension, with Christ Giving the Keys to St. Peter. After this he starting making his sculptures in Bronze. He made many religious structures mostly for Christ.

Donatello's biggest accomplishment was David. David is gothic style with beautiful lines and a straight face. It was the first large structure Donatello built and is one of the most famous statues in Florence today. Donatello's next biggest accomplishment was when he built Gattamelata. Gattamelata was built as a bronze statue in the city of Padua. It is in honor of Erasmo da Narni who passed away a year before Donatello built his structure. It shows Erasmo riding a horse in full battle gear. St. Mark and St. George were Donatello's next biggest accomplishments which he used marble to sculpt. He built those structures to decorate the Cathedral in Florence. Those are Donatello's biggest accomplishments and are still very famous statues today.
(Cartwright)
(Janson)

Besides Donatello's most famous sculptures he still has many other beautiful statues. Zuccone is a beautiful structure of which is assumed to be built for the Prophet Habbakuk. Another famous sculpture of Donatello's is St. George and it uses the same beatiful gothic. St. George is a structure that depicts both resting and action.
