I think we need to intentionally teach children positive traits and virtues because it helps them be successful in the academic areas of school.

Our students sometimes come to school with emotional baggage and if they do not know how to identify those emotions or have the awareness then they can't be as successful in the classroom if at all.

We also need to teach our students to work together and form positive relationships because they come from such diverse backgrounds. People tend to shy away from the unknown. We need to show our kids how to make positive relationships and support them in the process.

It is important to teach students the traits and values that will help them succeed in school and beyond. By explicitly teaching this skills, students have a common language to communicate their needs, thoughts, ideas, and feelings, and a common way to respond to each other in times of conflict. Having this common language helps students become independent in solving problems and conflicts. In addition, encouraging students to be empathetic helps them to better understand and work with their peers.

I think using the Home Connections would be a nice place to help students keep the learning fresh in their minds. Taking home the letter, and possibly the homework, and talking to their families about the lesson can reinforce the learning for the students, and help keep the parents apprised of what we are working on.

#1
It is vital that we intentionally teach children positive traits because they may not be getting taught them anywhere else. We hope that their parents/guardians are modeling and teaching this at home but we can't depend on that. These values will help them to succeed in life and will support them in being positive contributing global citizens in the world. Children need to learn what values will contribute to a peaceful and harmonious society when they are young so that these qualities can become engrained. These values and skills will help them to be tolerant and to mediate conflicts when they arise.
#2
I will use the home school connection with my class by sending home a focus word to parents/guardians. For example, if we are working on empathy and critical thinking, I may send home the word empathy and give it's definition. The student would need to talk to their family about the word and come up with an example of how empathy is shown at home. They would have to write this down and could include a picture as well.

I think it is important for us to intentionally teach children positive traits and virtues so that they know how to appropriately communicate with one another and others in the community they may come in contact with. What may be "okay" behavior and talk at home may not be appropriate at school. I think it's important for students to have empathy for one another and to be open minded. Students should be able to embrace each others differences and learn how to be accepting. By teaching positive traits and virtues, our students can form healthy relationships with their peers which can contribute to a harmonious classroom.

For each lesson, there is a home- school connection letter I can send home. This would allow parents to be apart of their child harmony experience by continuing the conversations from home.

I can give my students the vocabulary builder as homework to give them an opportunity to practice vocabulary they will hear/use for the upcoming lesson.

It is important that we intentionally teach students positive traits and virtues so students can have successful relationships with people throughout their lives. No one is born with these positive traits and virtues. People learn them throughout their lives. We cannot assume students will be coming into our class with similar experiences that teach similar virtues. When we intentionally teach these traits and virtues at a young age, students will be more successful in their relationships throughout their lives.

We intentionally need to teach children positive traits and virtues because these traits will not come naturally. Students need to be exposed to and practice these positive traits daily. With modern technology, it can be hard and sometimes awkward for students to participate in face to face activities. These face to face interactions and group activities are critical in teaching our children positive traits and virtues.

#1
We believe children need to be intentionally taught positive traits and virtues because they come to us with a variety of understandings of acceptable behavior and values.
Therefore, by explicitly teaching positive traits they will gain an understanding of how to build positive relationships and hopefully live a happy and successful life. People learn what they are taught and it's our responsibility as educators to give students the time to cultivate and practice how to best get along with others, be a good citizen and positive member of society.
#2
After having all students participate in the lessons and activities, we will make the activities a "may do" throughout the week. This way students can continue to practice and apply the focus themes. Also, we will incorporate and post the different resources in our classrooms to refer back during those everyday moments and continue to build positive relationships.

I like how each unit has a home-school connection. I could send these in emails or using my ClassDojo. The suggested activities are great for families. They are also a great resource for teachers.

The key vocabulary is great to add into my reading stations and overall reading comprehension time. We could discuss how a story we read is related to the key vocabulary. For example, when we read books like A Bad Case of Stripes, we can predict how Camila will feel when she goes to school and focus on clues of why she feels the way she does (related to Unit 2.2 Key vocab).
