Read the rest of chapter 1: Consider the stages of spelling development and think about your own class. How would you describe your class? Think about the Word Study practices in your building. How do they align to chapter 1?

My class is a mixture of Within Word Patterns and Syllable and Affixes. Throughout my building teachers are integrating sight word and roots, but I do not see word patterns being taught to increase spelling abilities. By continuing to increase our word study practices through the use of Words Their Way, we will build more fluent readers.

My class is a mixture of Letter-name Alphabetic and Within Word Pattern. I think that the word study practices in my building vary. The lower grades do a great job of teaching word study and going through the progressions. Other teachers don't put as much emphasis on it. I think that many aren't sure how to go about teaching it the correct way.

My class is a high ELL population, so we focus a lot on letter sounds and sight words. All of the class is in the emergent and letter name-alphabetic stage of spelling. We're working on recognizing blends and approprate vowels. We also do a lot of read alouds and repetition. Students also have word study journals that we work in regularly to keep them exposed to a lot of different word study practices.

My wonderful class is mostly English Language Learners, and I would say the majority of students would be considered emergent or at the 'pre-reading' level. Instruction is heavily focused on letter sounds, oral language skills, and basic vocabulary.
