The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is responsible for setting the standards for the definition of a small business in various categories (industries). Let’s go to the SBA website and learn more about these standards. Follow the link below and learns about small business size standards. Then go to the table found as a hyperlink in the article to identify an industry that interests you. Provide the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code and further explain what the standards are for that industry. Also, explain to your fellow students why you selected that industry and what surprised you about the information the site provided. Try to be unique and don’t’ select an industry that has already been reported on by another student. (http://www.sba.gov/content/small-business-size-standards )
BE SURE TO USE YOUR NAME ON POSTS AND COMMENTS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN POINTS> Those without names will not obtain credit.

311920 (NAICS) code - Coffee and Tea Manufacturing : Hannah Koenig

The standards for the coffee and tea manufacturing is composed of roasting coffee, manufacturing tea and coffee concentrates, blending of herbal teas, manufacturing coffee extracts, flavorings, and syrups. Roasted coffee includes whole and ground beans. Tea is composed of tea bags as well as instant or loose tea. Coffee concentrates are freeze-dried, frozen, or liquid concentrates. Businesses may provide their customers with grinding equipment in order to maintain product quality. The small business size standards for the coffee and tea manufacturing company is 750 employees. I would say that for being a small business 750 isn't terrible considering that many other small businesses listed were roughly 1,000 employees.

I was surprised to see that a lot of manufacturers handling the coffee and tea business were located in the U.S. Some of the top revenue businesses mentioned were from North Carolina, Ohio, and Los Angelos. When thinking about coffee and tea globally from tea blends, coffee extracts, and syrups, I was surprised that none of these products were manufactured out of the United States.

I chose this code to research due to the fact that I was curious to know more about the coffee and tea manufacturing and what this code was composed of. For a person like myself who loves coffee and tea, I was shocked to see the array of NAICS codes that linked to the coffee and tea manufacturing classification.

Cross References
* Establishments engaged in bottling and canning iced tea the (NAICS) code is 312111 for the Soft Drink Manufacturing.

Works Cited
https://businessdatacodes.com/naics/code-311920-coffee-and-tea-manufacturing-
http://www.hoovers.com/industry-facts.coffee-tea-manufacturing.1050.html
https://www.naics.com/naics-code-description/?code=311920

This small business administration standards are that the establishments provide short-term lodging in hotel facilities with a casino somewhere on its property. The casino on the premises has table wagering games, slot machines, and sports betting. The casino hotels tend to offer a range in services such as food and beverage, entertainment, swimming pools, valet parking, and conference/ convention facilities.

I chose this industry to cover because while it is a limited industry in terms of where it casinos can be built, it is a very profitable industry to be in. There are millions of people out there that love to gamble, some recreational and some professional. Either way, these people are spending up to tens of thousands of dollars at these casinos and are making the owners rich out of their minds. If I could own any kind of business out there, I would for sure choose to own a casino just based on the potential earnings that may be earned.

One thing that I found surprising was that out of the top 10 hotel casino revenue businesses, 6 of them are located inside Las Vegas, Nevada. I understand that gambling is legal inside Nevada, but I wouldn't think that 6 of the top 10 (including the top 3) would be located inside Las Vegas especially when you have other major cities such as Reno in Nevada. Only 3 of the other top 10 casinos are outside of Nevada, which include Wyomissing, PA, Saint Louis, MO, and Atlantic City, NJ.

“NAICS Code: 721120 Casino Hotels.” NAICS Association, NAICS Association, www.naics.com/naics-code-description/?code=721120.

114210 - Hunting and Trapping: Marcus Rackow

This industry is described by the SBA as "This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in one or more of the following: (1) commercial hunting and trapping; (2) operating commercial game preserves, such as game retreats; and (3) operating hunting preserves."

I chose this sector because I come from a family of hunters primarily duck, goose, and turkey and many times it is treated as a family activity. I always enjoyed going out and observing nature on the quiet days, with a touch of excitement when a duck flew over. I feel it is important to preserve the wildlife we have and ensure that hunters do not over hunt so that the activity can be enjoyed for a long time to come. The game and hunting preserves help keep wild life in check and allow hunting to continue. The game preserves allow the animals to reproduce and flourish while the hunting preserves give a place for hunting to take place. I was a bit surprised that farm raising animals, like rabbits is under the section of hunting and trapping as I would have thought this would be under a section like forestry and farming. Some businesses involved it this industry are:

Wildlife Managment Institure
Audubon Society of RI
K D Clark Services Inc
Clarendon Farms LLC
Los Cuernos Inc
California Wildlife Center
Tri-State Outfitters Inc
Crow Butte Outfitters LLC
Apex Wildlife Control LLC
Super Lucky Casino Inc

The SBA also stated this:
"Cross-References. I was born into a family where we always gathered in grandma's kitchen. I always helped her and learned that the way to cooking a great meal is creating recipes and not having a measuring cup in sight. Grandma always used words such as a dash of this or a pinch of that. These establishments generally handle merchandise in containers and use equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks.

I chose this industry because at my dad's retail store (Rudy's Feed n' Seed) we have a warehouse in the back, which would fall under this category. The retail store features a storefront with a warehouse for storage out back.

This industry involves businesses engaging in retailing pets, pet foods, and pet supplies and has a size standard of 20.5 million dollars to be considered a small business. The types of businesses in this category would be pet stores/shops or pet supply stores. This industry allows for pet grooming services, but does not allow for pet care services or veterinary services.

I selected this NAICS code because I have an interest in businesses related to pets and wanted to learn more about this type of industry.

This code involves businesses that are engaged in the manufacturing of oil and gas machinery or equipment. This could include drilling, production, and derrick equipment. A derrick is a device used above an oil or gas well for lifting purposes. If you’ve ever seen on television where oil shoots out of the ground and there is a tower like structure above it, that’s a derrick. The equipment or machinery can be used in both land and water drilling applications. To qualify as a small business the business must have fewer than 1,250 employees.

I chose this code because it relates to my current employer Chart Energy & Chemicals. In La Crosse they build brazed aluminum heat exchangers which are used in cryogenic processing of gas and chemicals. This product would fall under gas well equipment. When natural gas or other types are extracted from the earth they must be purified and separated from each other. To do this the gas is cooled to subzero temperatures through the exchanger and then the different compounds separate.

While the La Crosse site is well under the employee amount, but they are only one site of many within Chart’s portfolio. Chart as a whole exceeds this amount and would not be considered a small business.

I chose the child day care services. This is under the Social Assistance Industry and the NAICS code is 624410. It involves being engaged in providing day care for infants or children. They generally care for preschool children but, can care for older children when they are not in school. They may also offer pre-kindergarten educational programs. Some different examples are child day care babysitting services, nursery schools, child or infant day care centers, and preschool centers (Admin).

I chose this industry because I work with children preschool to fifth grade. I am very interested in starting my own child day care service that will have educational programs for the preschool age. One thing that interested me was that preschool centers would be under the same category. I would think they would fall more under the school category. I am very interested to find more out about this industry.

Works Cited

Admin. “NAICS Code 624410.” Class Codes, Admin Https://Classcodes.com/Wp-Content/Uploads/2016/04/Workers-Compensation-Class-Codes.png, 29 July 2018, classcodes.com/lookup/naics-code-624410/.

I chose to look into Educational Support Services. This service located under the Educational Services sub sector, the NAICS code is 611710. The primary function of this industry is to provide non instructional services that support educational processes or systems. Examples of this industry include educational consultants, educational testing, educational guidance counseling services, student exchange programs, and educational testing evaluation services. The industry currently has a size standard of 15 million dollars.

I chose this industry to research because I currently work with children and adults that require educational support services. Through taking some of my participants to educational testing clinics, reading services, and educational counseling, I have obtained a greater understanding on how important and necessary these services are. Without some of these services, many individuals would not receive the proper education they need to successfully transition into adulthood and society on their own. To add, it is important for myself to be aware of the services in this sector because it may be my future career field. While reading this information, I found it interesting that "school bus attendant" correlated with this industry. All of the other services were education-based for individuals, but school bus attendant is a very broad position and is often used for safety reasons.

Works Cited

Admin. “NAICS Code 611710.” Class Codes, Admin Https://Classcodes.com/Wp-Content/Uploads/2016/04/Workers-Compensation-Class-Codes.png, 29 July 2018, classcodes.com/lookup/naics-code-611710/.

“NAICS Code: 611710 Educational Support Services.” NAICS Association, www.naics.com/naics-code-description/?code=611710.

Sports teams and clubs is found under performing arts and spectating sports. This sector can range from large scale operating sports like the NFL and NBA, or be for western technical college sports. I chose this category because it is so widespread and I grew up playing sports and being in clubs my whole life. I was in, golf, tennis, basketball, and baseball. This had me interested because multiple people used clubs and sports as an escape to enjoy something they liked to do. Some jobs that could be included in this category are, ticket sales, marketing for sports teams, being on sports teams and clubs. The big money comes from the players. These establishments typically handle goods in containers, such as boxes, drums or barrels and they use equipment like forklifts or pallet jacks to move these items around the warehouse. They won't handle any bulk items typically in the warehouse, and they typically have a large variety of different items.
I chose this industry, because it i something that I deal with everyday at work. I work at Kwik Trip and moving items around the warehouse, whether it's to the correct trailer to be loaded or to make more room for more items that are coming into the warehouse. I think it's very surprising that these items are typically not held in bulk, because personally I feel that it would be easier to hold one or two items in bulk, rather than a bunch of items. Obviously that wouldn't be the case for Kwik Trip, because they have a large amount of items that they need to constantly stock in their stores, but I can see a small storage company holding a few items.

“NAICS Code 493110 General Warehousing and Storage.” Description - NAICS Code 423910 - Sporting and Recreational Goods and Supplies Merchant Wholesalers, siccode.com/en/naicscodes/493110/general-warehousing-and-storage.

I found it interesting that this industry is is allowed so many employees compared to others. It surprises me that the SBA can't help industries or business because of the definition of small.

The Industry I chose is Industrial Sand Mining and their NAICS code is 212322. The standard for industrial sand mining is operating industrial grade sand pits, dredging for industrial grade sand, and preparing industrial grade sand. The size standard of employees is 500. Industrial Sand Mining is part of Subsector 212, Mining (expect oil and gas). This code has 14 different entity classification inside of it. From sand blasting to sand mining. I selected this industry, because I have always been fascinated by their operations and how much they generate from sand. Where I work, we do a lot of business with local sand mines, so going on site all the time I get to see what they do first hand. I have been going on-site at a sand mine for about once a month for two years, and I still get excited. Seeing how they operate and move so quickly is very interesting. How many people these sands mine employee is very cool to see as well. From the reading on the site, what I found most surprising was how many different entity classifications are under one name. It was crazy to see all the different aspects of a sand mine and what is classified to be sand mining. I also was surprised that the standard size was 500 employees, I thought there would be more.

ECFR - Code of Federal Regulations, www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=b919ec8f32159d9edaaa36a7eaf6b695&mc=true&node=pt13.1.121&rgn=div5#se13.1.121_1201.

“NAICS Code: 212322 Industrial Sand Mining.” NAICS Association, www.naics.com/naics-code-description/?code=212322.

Usually when I get the option to choose a business I choose an online resale clothing store. I decided I wanted to switch things up. There were many subsections of this code. For example, passport photography was included. That surprised me because I always lumped that in with the post office. Siccode.com had a list of the industry leaders, and Lifetouch was number one. I loved this because It brought me back to elementary and high school picture days. This Cross reference list came directly from siccode.com as well, I thought it was interesting how commercials and photojournalism were included in this list.
Chad Mara - Fitness and Recreational Sports Centers

I love going to the gym and working out. Therefore I find the fitness and recreational sports centers very interesting. The number of employees to still be considered a small business changed from industry to industry. The Maximum amount of employees to still be considered a small business is not listed. The size standards in millions of dollars to be considered a small business is $7.5. The NAICS code is 713940 and the subsection is 713. What surprised me the most is that fitness and recreational sports centers are grouped with gambling in terms of subsections. I plan to one day manage my own fitness center based around the sport of powerlifting.

I chose residential property management because I plan to do this to some extent in the future. My uncle owns two large property management businesses, one in Rochester and one in Northern Michigan, in which I am interested in working for when I am out of College. The size standard for this is $7.5 million, with an unlisted standard number of employees. The NAICS code for residential property management in section 53, subsection 531. I was quite surprised how much bigger the size standard was for the leasing of residential property which is about five times as large as just the property management.

https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=b919ec8f32159d9edaaa36a7eaf6b695&mc=true&node=pt13.1.121&rgn=div5#se13.1.121_1201

Sub-categories in this classification range from 500 to 1000 people as the limit to be considered a small business. I'm a little surprised the number isn't higher for many of the categories because the furniture market is very competitive and is dominated by large players. I can understand that some specialty sectors, like Custom Architectural Woodwork and Millwork, have a lower threshold.
This is found in sections 31-33, subsector 337. I chose this because I have worked in the furniture industry for almost 9 years, but there is still a lot I can learn about it.

Works Cited

“Table of Size Standards.” Small BusinessAdministration,2017,https://www.sba.gov/document/support--table-size-standards
