Valerie's Example: Teachers can work together to identify unique approaches for change by using technology in new ways. Using a Chromebook to write an essay is just an expensive substitution for a pencil and piece of paper. However, if we collaborate to create a 5 minute documentary on the essay topic with pictures, video clips, voice-over, transitions, and then share it with a public audience, I've transformed the process and the product to something that can be much more purposeful and impactful.

Social media is considered to be just that... SOCIAL. I propose we take a new perspective on social media as it relates to education. The seven ISTE standards for students were written to ensure that learning with technology is student-driven. Many students currently do most of their writing and creation using a social media outlet. Many times, this outlet is what prospective employers view. Why not direct our instruction to creating students who learn socially? Social media learning activities can provide the opportunity to revamp student learning to fit the needs of the 21st century learner.

Valerie, when I think about it, I think about it as it is not what the technology is but how it is applied that changes things. We can have all the technology and access in the world but if we do not effectively integrate it into our classroom then it is worthless to our students. For example, if we only use our laptops in the classroom as just another busy activity, then in essences it is just another worksheet. Our students need to use the technology in ways that are meaningful to them and allow them to create their own learning experiences.

Technology needs to be thought of as another tool to get the desired outcome in an enhanced way. Typing spelling words instead of writing them does not enhance student knowledge. The stirrup change the way they fought, it made it better. Technology needs to change the way students learn which will make learning easier (hopefully).
Jaclyn

The impact of technology in education is important in terms of how it is utilized to engage students. Merely turning on the projector isn't appropriate use of technology. We need to make sure that we teach kids how to appropriately use it so they can facilitate their own learning and understanding. Students also need an opportunity to collaborate with one another using technology. They need to practice appropriate communication, so they are more likely to use appropriate communication outside of the classroom.
