1. Teens are more susceptible to rape than the general population.

Impacted differently: This can skew a teenage girl's mind to understand relationships and consent differently compared to others who experience assault at an older age and have a fully developed brain.

• Being a teenage victim of rape may be challenging to report or speak up about because a teenager may not know or have resources, may be afraid of parents finding out (not having complete confidentiality), and may not want her peers to know.

57% percent of all sexual assaults occur during a date.

Each year 500K women are victims of sexual assault.

Impacted: Feelings of guilt, responsible, believing it was their fault.

• The percentage of girls who thought spending a lot of money on a date entitles a person to intercourse without consent actually went up between 1988 and 1998. It's like we're regressing as a society.

• 90% of acquaintance rape involves alcohol. Which is interesting because it's not a cause of domestic violence. I'd be interested to understand the role it plays.

How impacted differently:

• They are still figuring out who they are and their own sexuality. It's a vulnerable time. They will have a harder time recognizing what happened to them as sexual assault and it will have a more profound impact on their self-esteem and ability to form healthy romantic relationships in the future.

How impact their ability to speak out:

• They won't feel as empowered to speak out, especially since it is often a case of date rape.

1. the 'I' in LGBTQIA+ stands for intersexed.

2. Sexual behavior and sexual attribution are two different things.

Impacted Differently: This group may be subjected to bias/ homophobia due to their sexual orientation. They are not often taken seriously- or they are ostracized compared to others who identify as straight and identify as their sex.

• Someone who identifies differently than the status quo may often feel discouraged to speak up about their sexual assault because they are afraid of being mistreated due to how they identify. They may be nervous to conduct an official report due to having to use a 'dead name' and being misgendered.

• Until 1974 being gay was considered a mental health disorder.

• Men on the down low consider the term gay to be derogatory.

How impacted differently:

• They experience double the amount of shame, victim blaming, and barriers to reporting the crime.

How impact their ability to speak out:

• Greatly hinders it because they risk being outed for their sexual orientation, being blamed, and often lack a support system.

2. Men have a harder time expressing emotions than women.

Impacted Differently: Men often internalize the rape that happens to them because they don't report or talk about it. This often leads to depression and anxiety, as well as affects their identity in the way they sexually identify. This is different from other groups victimized by rape because men tend to neglect their feelings about their trauma and associate sexual harassment as something that happens to women, not men.

• Because rape is believed to happen more to women, men are often afraid, embarrassed, and feel emasculated when they are assaulted. Oftentimes, this prevents them from seeking and reporting help in fear of what others may think.

Cultural differences of sexual orientation definitions.

Sexual orientation is minimized and labeled as "just a phase".

Impacted: Feeling rejected and isolated. Committing a moral sin/ unnatural act.

Can affect a child's outcome on forming their own definition of sexuality.

Impact ability to speak out:

Can keep males from seeking services from counseling.

Women assaulted by the same sex, will not define the action as rape.

Transgender individuals are often mistrusted due to their social ostracization.

• This may cause a person with disabilities to physically have trouble getting help and resources compared to someone who does not have a disability. Additionally, they may feel scared to speak up due to not being taken seriously.

• They may feel more embarrassed because they are supposed to be protectors and can't even protect themselves. They may also not believe men can be raped and/or blame themselves for their physiological reaction.

How impacts ability to speak out:

• They will feel less able to speak out due too their level of embarrassment and fears that they will be believed to be gay.

• They may lack to cognitive ability to cope with what has happened or even recognize it.

How impact their ability to speak out:

• They may be less likely to be believed because either people think they don't know what they are talking about or that someone wouldn't want to do that to them.

Disbelief that they can be a victim/survivor of sexual assault.

Young men or boys may worry about their parents' reaction or about being blamed.
