He explained that alcohol has numerous health defects such as broken families, poverty and illness. His speech had an immediate effect on attendees of the event and the town Rochester. In 1840,  The Washington Temperance Society was the largest organization to be formed out of the original Temperance Society. Even though these laws were lightly enforced, they also decreased drinking greatly in the 1850's. The various Temperance societies show how reform societies can impact what people do and how they think.
