For my year 3 dissertation I will be doing a 20-minute documentary.

Main Aim: To show how important football academies are in stopping kids falling through the net and staying on the right path.

The initial idea of my documentary is to demonstrate how much of a significance football academies play in keeping kids on the right path and in some cases saving them. I will be telling this story through the BW Pace academy, which is linked to the National League side Boreham Wood. More specifically telling this story through the manager of the academy, Lloyd Doyley. He is a key person who has day to day contact with the students but also holds a big responsibility of guiding and supporting them on and off the pitch. He has lived the experiences of seeing students break through from the academy to the first team but alternatively having to help students who have fell down the wrong path and had to pick them back up again to get them back on track. Lloyd is passionate about the academy and his main priority is to ensure these kids leave BW Pace academy if not breaking through into the first team, then with a future ahead of them.

Themes in my documentary:

· The significant role BW Pace academy plays in saving kids

· The support and guidance which is provided from the academy

· Role models

· Helping the players work towards their dream goals of becoming a pro footballer, or leaving the academy with a set future

· Ex-students stories (Sorba Thomas)

· Drugs and violence (case study of ex-student who went to BW Pace academy and got involved with drugs, who was then later kicked out of his home. Changed his life around with the help and support of the professionals around him at BW to later go onto university to become a teacher.)

This sounds like a strong proposal. Access seems to be in place. Like the fact that you have a main character then case study stories that are about impact of main character. My initial feedback would be think about where your film is going, the arc of your story. Where does it go to? But this seems in very good shape right now. More research about narrative required. Good start.

There are ethical considerations that need to be discussed for me to minimise these risks in my documentary.

Ofcom

-Section one: Protecting the under-18s. The involvement of people under eighteen must be taken with due care. There must be consent given by a parent or guardian for their involvement if under 15 and there must be no distress or harm caused to them.

-Section two: Harm and offence. The participants must not experience any harm or offence, likewise, should the viewers. In my documentary drugs and violence may be briefly spoken about but in a way which portrays how the Pace Academy helps it students stay away from this behaviour. Therefore, if this is discussed it would be justified by context.

-Section seven: Fairness it is essential that I avoid unjust or unfair treatment to the participants of my documentary. This risk can be minimised by rule 7.3: informed consent. I'll reassure them that I will do no harm and protect. I will also make an agreement with them to see the fine cut and have a say in whether certain material should be included or not.

-Telling the story with fairness and accuracy: The story will be told as the subject tells it.

There are ethical considerations that need to be discussed for me to minimise these risks in my documentary. OfcomSection one: Protecting the under eighteens -Rule 1.28 protects the involvement of people under eighteen in programmes. Due care must be taken over the welfare and dignity or those involved and there must be consent given by the participant, parent, or guardian. -Rule 1.29 states that there must be no unjustified distress, harm or anxiety caused by their involvement. Section seven: Fairness -Rule 7.1 highlights that as the filmmaker I must avoid unjust or unfair treatment to the participants in my documentary.-This risk can be minimised by rule 7.3 informed consent. In a summary this means those involved know the purpose of the documentary, their contribution, any changes made and any potential risks. Section eight: Privacy-This means avoiding any unwarranted infringement of privacy in my documentary. Ethics of documentary-Access: I’m an intern at Boreham Wood, so access into the Pace Academy and participants is easily accessible. The documentary will be told through one main character (the manager of one of the Pace Academies) so I need to get informed consent for their involvement. -Trust: I will meet with my subject and build a relationship.

Main aim of the documentary

To show how important football academies are in stopping it’s players falling through the net and in some cases saving them. This documentary will be told through National League side Boreham Wood’s Pace academy.

More specifically this documentary will be told through one of the managers of the Pace Academies Connor Smith. He is a significant person to do with the storyline of this documentary. As he has day to day contact with the players but also the responsibility of supporting them on and off the pitch. Connor has lived through the experiences of seeing players break through from the academy into the first team but alternatively having to help players who have fallen down the wrong path. Connor is passionate about the academy, and one of his main priorities is to ensure the players leave if not breaking through into the first team, then with a future ahead of them.

Themes
Themes in the documentary consist of how the academy supports and guides its players by pushing them towards their dream of becoming a professional footballer or leaving the academy with a set future. Role models are another occurring theme, with reference to ex-student Sorba Thomas who was once at the Pace academy and now finds himself playing in the Championship. Drugs and violence is a societal issue which is touched on to showcase how the academy stops its players falling down this path, looking into an ex-student who got involved in this. To then with the help and support of the academy turn his life around go onto university and become a teacher.

Interviews

This documentary will be told through the manager Connor Smith so interviews will be mainly with him. However, I want to interview other staff members such as the chairman and players.

Research and Access

Access to the BW Pace Academy is easily accessible for me as I’m currently a media intern at Boreham Wood.

I need to do more research to think about the style of documentary adopted for the storytelling. Where my documentary is going, the arc of my story.

Road Map

November- So far I have spoken to the chief executive of the club to get confirmation from him that I would be allowed access into the academy to produce my documentary. After that I spoke to one of the managers Connor Smith to find out if this was something he’d like to help me with and be a part of.

December- After getting permission to go ahead with my documentary idea from the club and main subject I now want to progress this further by arranging to meet with Connor to discuss this in more depth and outline some of my ideas with him and ethics of the documentary, especially as there will be involvement of players under 18 .

January- If everything goes to plan I would want to start filming in January after the Christmas break.

Today I met with Charlie, who is the CEO of Boreham Wood FC to discuss my documentary idea.

I told Charlie the story idea that I wanted to do on the BW PASE academy. Which in a nut shell was going to be about the relationship between a manager and a player. More specifically looking into how the manager acts as a social worker to a certain extent. By being a role model to this player, who guides and supports him to stay on the right path.

After speaking with Charlie, he felt this was a good story but wouldn't be best told through the participants that were available to me.

Connor who is the manager of one of the academy teams is fairly new to his role so Charlie felt that he hasn't established a strong enough bond for this kind of story to be told through him and a student who he has ultimately 'saved'.

Being an intern at Boreham Wood and having great access and connections within the club I knew that I could find another story.

My new documentary is going to be on PASE Academy graduate Sorba Thomas who now plays for Huddersfield Town and Wales International.

This documentary is going to be about Sorba and his journey.

After speaking with the CEO of Boreham Wood last week and agreeing on access, participants and for my overall documentary to take place at the club. Things soon found to be difficult...

Due to Sorba Thomas having a busy schedule with Huddersfield and International call up to Wales. What I was asking for from him unfortunately wasn't achievable.

As a result of this I had to find a new documentary idea. My new film is on a friend of mine called Mollie Dench. Mollie was the first person who popped into my head when my first idea fell through, as she has a story to tell.

Mollie has played football all her life and had a lot of success with it. She was one of the youngest players in the Championship for Watford and London Bess until she went on loan to QPR. Football was Mollie's life, her career plan and dream of being a professional football player. Until one day she had a car crash which made this dream flash before her eyes. This incident has made her footballing career come crashing down. She is unable to play football and it has basically set her back to square 1 again.

My documentary is going to show Mollies journey. From what life was like before the accident to now.

Start
Starting with where it all began. When did she get involved with football, her success, highest and unforgettable moments etc.

Middle
To what life is like now for her. How she copes physically and mentally coming to terms with what has happened. Having to attend physio sessions instead of football sessions.

End
Ending with jeopardy to whether Mollie will get back to where she once was on the football pitch.

I knew that I had access into Portsmouth ladies and to a player in the club who is also my friend. The story of the documentary is to demonstrate the balance semi professional footballers have to go through such as balancing full time education or work alongside football.

Today I met with Evie to begin filming for my documentary.

Firstly, met at her house to film the master interview. I had a rough structure in my head of how I wanted the interview to go in terms the questions I asked and in what order. This is because I wanted the interview to get Evie to introduce herself, her love for football, how she got involved in etc then I wanted her to reveal how being a semi professional footballer isn't as easy as it seems. There are balances that they have to juggle such as working full time or being in full time education whilst playing football because they can't have a full time career in it and this causes a lot of pressure for them- which Evie reveals by talking about instances where the balance has got too much for her. Then I wanted Evie to say how she does balance full time education, while giving so much time and commitment to football and if she sees a future in football.

Overall, I think the master interview with Evie went really well. As a result of us having a relationship built on trust she felt comfortable and confident talking to me about the balances she has to juggle but also the pressures that come with it. Talking about 2 "major incidents" she has had where the pressure has become too much.

I also filmed lots of b-roll footage of Evie walking in a park, in her house and driving to football training. This was something I lacked in my FB666 Documentary so I have made sure that I over shoot everything and gets lots of b-roll to help piece the documentary together.

After a full day of filming at Evie's house, I travelled down to Portsmouth with her to film footage of Evie training and do interviews with her manager Jay and teammate Jazz.

I wanted to get an interview with Evie's manager Jay to see his thoughts on the balance his players have to deal with being semi professional footballers, but I also wanted to find out what Jay as the manager has to balance and the pressures that he faces as a result of giving so much time to football whilst having to perform outside of football in full time work - until he was recently made full time by Portsmouth.

I also got an interview with another player from Evie's football team, Jazz. I feel this will make the documentary stronger by hearing from another semi professional footballer who works a physical full time job as a labourer alongside football. This further demonstrates the balance these players have to deal with but as seen in these interviews the balance has got to a point where it's been too much and players have had to take time out to cope.

Today I met with Mick to go over my rough cut.

These are some of the improvements for my documentary:
-Be more specific
When Evie talks about studying- where does she study, what does she study, how many hours a week, has she ever missed assignments because of football
-Too much of Evie in the master interview
I need to interview Evie in different locations. As she talks a lot about driving & the incident which happened to her occurring while driving i'm going to interview her in a car and blend between this interview and the master interview.
-Expand on the incident
I need to expand and look deeper into the incident. What happened more, why did the balance of education and football get too much, how did she get to that point, did she feel as though she has lost control, how did she come out of it, who helped her...
-Interview with Evie's Dad
Evie's Dad had to pick her up when she had a mental break down on the motorway- interview him about this. Starting with how he remembers Evie playing football as a kid, taking her to her first training session to how did he feel in that moment when Evie rang him, had he pushed her too far
-Family photos of Jay
Images of Jay and his family to show what football almost broke up.
-Sequences

Evie with her family in the kitchen

Geoff being a proud parent- going through photo albums of Evie (sat on the sofa)

Evie and Geoff together in the kitchen, walking etc - to show the bond between father and daughter

Film Evie and Geoff talking together about the incident (over kitchen island)- me observing

How does Evie get over what happened - shots of her in her room alone going through pictures of when she was at Villa (bed room)
