November first is "All Saints Day." This is typically when the children are celebrated. Families go to the graves of deceased children with decorations, their favorite food, toys, etc. On November second the adults are honored. Once again, families go to their grave sites and bring their favorite foods, alcoholic beverages, picnic blankets, etc. On both days, the families just enjoy themselves and have a picnic honoring their dead loved ones.

Ofrendas, or altars, are made in homes to honor dead family members. Before setting up the altar, families clean their houses. The ofrenda is set on a table covered with a fine tablecloth (usually white), then covered with papel picado. Pictures of the deceased family members are placed on the altar along with water, candles, flowers, sugar skulls, calaveras, and many other things.

El dia los muertos includes a lot of different symbols and decorations. Some of these include skulls (including sugar skulls), skeletons, papel picado, flowers (marigolds in particular), pan de muerto, and many other things. I think the decorations is what makes el dia los muertos stand out.

Shouldn't it Be a Sad Day?

Normally in the United States we view death as a bad thing. A lot of us fear it and don't want it to happen to us or anyone we love. This view is different for people who celebrate the day of the dead. They believe that the spirits and souls of loved ones would be insulted or offended by family members mourning and being sad. This is why the day of the dead is a big celebration. They part as if the family member is still there and they want them it enjoy the day just like they do.

There are usually parades and festivals on the day of the dead in places that celebrate the holiday. It's kind of just a big celebration all over. People also go to the grave sites of loved ones like I said above. The graves are cleaned and decorated then family members "eat" with their deceased family members. Overall it's just a big day to celebrate the continuation of life of loved ones.

One thing that is usually done on the day of the dead is story telling. Families come together and tell stories about their loved ones. Once again, it is believed that the dead do not want to be mourned over or thought about in a sad way so a way not to do this is to tell stories about them. Not only does it keep the day a celebration like it's supposed to be but it also keeps the family history alive.
