The Ego is a component of the consciousness in which the consciousness is aware of reality and is categorized as the logical component of the mind. It ponders the consequences of actions and serves as a check to the demands of the id and superego. The monster most identifies with this portion of the conscious mind as Shelley demonstrates the creature’s internal turmoil with his conscious desire to be innocent, and his unconscious desire to wreak havoc on humanity.

In Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, ego plays a big role in all the characters. For instance Victor regards more to his Id by not listening to anyone and just doing what he wants to do, as he created this creation, even after his professor and friend had warned him not to. While the fiend listens to his superego and Id he attempts to come to compromises with both but at the end he ends up attacking his own self. A great example of this would be when he burned the Delaceys cottage and right after he felt sad and began to say that this would have not occurred if he would have just left everything as before. This is indeed an example of both Id and superego because Id will tell you to do it and then your superego will question you to why you did it. - Emily Uribe

Freud's theory is reasonable because we all have a good and a bad side as I like to think of it. In this case our bad side would be Id and our good side would be our superego. We all comprehend what the right thing to do would be but we also acknowledge that the bad thing might not be good but still seems more pleasing. For instance soda is so good, however water is better for your health, although soda is more satisfying it's not good for your body. Just like with Victor Frenkinstien he had a great family and was wealthy he had it all, however he wanted more and by wanting more this brought him some really bad consequences. There’s always going to be two routes to take and both have different outcomes. -Emily Uribe
