Imagine you are ten years old and you've lived in the same place your whole life--and you love your home. Now imagine that war has come to the city you love, and you need to flee for your life. This is Ha's story. She and her family are evacuated from Saigon, Vietnam, but they are forced to leave Ha's father behind. They are taken first to a refugee camp before settling in Alabama. What a shock: Ha doesn't know the language, the food is different, the other kids make fun of her and she misses her her father. How will Ha adapt to this foreign land...and will she ever feel at home? This book is written in verse, which is a type of freestyle poetry. It's a very fast read. This is one of the first novels in verse I ever read. NOT BORING. Seriously. If you get bored easily, this is definitely the book for you. In fact, the author wrote the book for his son, who has ADHD. The action starts in the first chapter and just keeps going. Percy Jackson has never really fit in. And he finds out why when he's attacked by his math teacher (who turned into a monster) and is sent by his mom to the school where he really belongs. At Camp Half Blood, Percy learns that his dad is the Greek God Poseidon and everything starts to make sense. He meets lots of other half blood kids and when a mystery unfolds, he sets out on a quest to save the world. This book is about girls and menstrual periods. So if that makes you uncomfortable you should probably not read this book. Or maybe you should. Periods are a fact of life. What's the big deal? And that is what this book is about. Have you ever needed to ask a friend to borrow their sweatshirt to wear around your waist? Have you ever run out of hygiene products? Did you ever wish you didn't have to treat your period like a Top Secret? I enjoyed this book so much, it reminded me exactly what it felt like to be a middle schooler. One of my favorite graphic novels of all time! Not only is Jordan the new kid at the exclusive Riverside Academy, he's also one of the only students of color. He wants nothing more than to draw comics, get into art school, and be a regular kid. Though he makes a few friends, he soon notices he's not treated like a regular kid. The well meaning librarian only recommends books to him with down-and-out black characters. The teachers keep mixing him up with the other black kid in school. On top of all that, he's one of the few kids on financial aid and that makes things...awkward.
