Anyone who suspects that may have a disability and need special educations services may refer the child for special education consideration. School districts are required to have formal "child find" procedures to locate, evaluate, and count children who may have disabilites.

Parents will find it helpful to keep all copies of records, all letters forms and reports for the child. Within 15 days after receiving the referral the school must set up a IEP team meeting the parents are part of the IEP team. To see if they need special education services.

Based on the evaluation results, the IEP team determines whether or not the child need services. To be eligible the child must have a disability that requires the services.

Initial Evaluation

Written parental consent must be given before any special education evaluations can be conducted. Once the written consent is given the evaluation begins. The child is is given a full and individualized to determine eligibility for his/her educational needs.
