We are a public school, and the are central entities that coordinate with external companies. This is a good thing, the bigger customer (schools working together), the better attention, and more power in negotiations with the external companies.

Here I will try to illustrate how things are done at our school from my perspective as an IT operation manager.

When students start, they're are imported into Microsoft AD (this AD is shared by 30+ schools) from our administrative system (the system where our clerks enter student information). The students lends a laptop that is setup by IT operations (using Microsoft SCCM, the laptop is filled from a central server via network cable, currently with Windows 10). The network is using AD to give students access to the network (802.1x, Cisco ISE). The AD-account is also used in an identity system called FEIDE (https://www.feide.no/introducing-feide), which give access to different educational resources. The central IT-department have a IT-operation handbook that we use at the schools. The student has no administrative rights, the staff has administrative rights on their computers.

This works well, the reason is that the central IT-department is working well. But getting funding to keep this in shape is always a fight (from what I hear).

We don't really have an external partner for the administration of our network. We have a partner who is physically installing fibre cabling and main copper installations. Concerning user management, there is a software synchronisation between our software in the students administration (Informat) and our servers. When a new student has enrolled in our school, after synchronisation, the account exists in our pedagogical school platform (Smartschool) and on our local network (MS-AD).

Most of the administrating is done by the school ict manager. For setting up the server we have an extern ICT-specialist. He's also doing the maintenance. He is familiar to our infrastructure and could run everything if our ICT-Manager suddenly wouldn't be able to work for any reason.

In our school we have no external support and all job is done by computer science teachers and in a few cases by electronics teachers. That includes wiring, hardware and software maintenance alongside our teaching obligations.

In Greece there are established some technical centres as supporters to schools known as KEPLINET which stands for Centres of Informatics and New Technologies. They are usually one placed per state prefecture (except big ones such as Attica and Thessaloniki where there are more than one), crewed by two to four ICT colleagues and have to support all kind of schools from kindergarten to upper secondary schools within their prefecture, without having any kind of financing. It is up to their efforts and they cannot do that much as the help requests they have to respond to are too many.

Imogen Ireland - I'm doing this course to investigate best routes for a rural adult education centre. I don't think there would be budget for external partners. If there were, service level agreement and group purchasing would be important. Also a partner that understands technology is the servant of pedagogy and not the other way around!

In 2 schools I work with one firm who setup the firewalls and the wireless system. He also maintains the server, if something goes wrong, in one school. In the thirth school his wireless system was to pricey, so I bought a cheaper one and installed it my self. So luckely I do have some technical help when something goes wrong, because it's hard maintaining all the different systems there are right now!

In our school of 860 students and 75 teachers we allow access to our network only to teachers and back office staff. We have a ICT Service Contractor who has evaluated our service requirements and agreed a maintenance contract on our network and devices. We would see staff from our ICT Contractor when a problem or issue arises that we cannot resolve ourselves. There are limitations to the contract, for example the service contract does not include maintenance on our printers. We have a separate contractor for that. As a Voluntary secondary we are run and managed by a Borad of Management and as such receive no support from our government except that they provide us with a 100Mbps broadband service. So ICT Strategy is developed by myself and the management team (Principal and Deputy Principal). The use of a ICT Contractor is vital to facilitate the resolution of complex issues regarding network infrastructure or hardware issues such as broken laptops etc. They also assist with virus issues and maintaining security of the network.However the service contractor is ot proactive, instead is reacting to issues as they arise,

Like i explain before in the other section/video, since the school is very big, over 2660 students with more than 250 teachers plus all the administrative people, we have to administrate a lot of accounts. Since the cost of changing servers is high we decided to virtualize all the servers, and they are more than 20 (DC, file servers, applications servers, database servers, webservers, print servers, backup data centers, joomla servers, moodle servers, ...). For this job we relie on a private company that gives us IT support. They help us virtualize all the servers, implemented all the backup philosophy (raid5, bata center, cloud services).
The rest of the administration regarding the cisco equipment (routers and switches) is performed by the Ministry of Education.
But for us it was very important to search professiona l support.

I work for several primary schools in Ghent, Belgium. The City of Ghent established these schools. There are two networks; an administrative part and an educational part. The networks are managed by Digipolis, a semi independent organisation that manages all of the cities IT infrastructure. In addition the admin network is supported by Digipolis. The educational part is supported by me and my colleagues on other schools.
Our ISP contracts are also managed by Digipolis and are sufficient for our needs. We get the same quality of servive as the cities administration, can ask for upgrades when needed and generaly keep up with modern standards.
At the Department of Education of our city there's an ICT-cell that coördinates between the ICT-co's at the schools (me and colleagues) and Digipolis. There are regular meetings on both ends. This set-up works well for us.
We have city Facility Management for maintaining our infrastucture as well. The fact that the cost for infrastructure does not affect our budget directly is a huge boon, on the other hand we are dependent of and sometimes curtailed byCity regulations (e.g. WIFI restrictions). The contact with Facility Management goes without central coördination and could be more effective...

I think the case study illustrated a typical development in schools. The trend towards greater utilisation of ICT, especially online activity, means that the basic setup soon becomes inadequate and the need for much more elaborate systems is going to quickly assert itself, hence the need to introduce external partners. In our country we don’t use external partners for the support of the IT infrastructure because the schools have small budgets. The IT teachers do the first level support, and if the problem is about the Internet access we communicate with the central technical center (Hellenic School Network) for phone support, otherwise if the problem is about the equipment we communicate with the peripheral technical center (KEPLINET). In special cases we use external partner. In my school we have one server for file, print and security services and another one for mail services. All servers use Microsoft Server 2003 and RAID 5 for data security. We have structured cabling and connectivity all over the school, with fiber or copper cables. Also, many Access Points provide the WiFI connectivity to the teachers and in special cases to the students. Certainly (!!!) the administration is a part of the ICT teacher’s duties. 5

We don't have industry partners or other external partners. This job is supported either by the ICT teachers, or by Tecnical Peripheral Centers called KePliNet, or by the Hellenic School Network. If problems exist, schools have to ask external support giving their own small budget.
Usually schools have one computer server for everything, files, printing mailing and security. The internet is supported via cabled and wireless infrastructure.

In the Principality of Asturias, our regional administration takes care of all the electronics at schools (switches, routers, APs and phone and Internet connection). An IT company work for them to provide support to all regional administration, schools included. As a Primary School our budget is small, so we cannot afford to have IT partners or external technicians. We had a server provided by the regional administration but now this model ended. At the moment we do not have external support for our network but I expect that this will be necessary in the future. It would be great to have onsite support but this would not be financially viable. One possible option is to have a cluster of schools that could share a dedicated technician. In my experience many of the problems that arise are very easily sorted but if teachers have to wait for a few days to get support it could cause frustration with ICT.

unlike other jurisdictions the ministry does not provide any support for individual schools. We can seek advice from the PDST TIE (they provide CPD for teachers and advice to schools). They also provide us with our internet connections, 100mbs 95mpb actual :-), and support for that when it goes down. However their support stops at their router in the school.
The network admin is done by me on top of a full teaching timetable and I learn as I go, thank god for google. I can access advice from some providers that we have established a relationship with over time. This however is AdHoc, but service contracts are expensive and we have to decide to upgrade and replace old devices or a service contract.

I teach in a small school with 12 staff. We currently have a 35 Megs connection to the internet provided by the Schools Broadband Network. Their support ends at their router in our network cabinet. We don't have a server, everything is cloud based. The only contract we have is for a single multi function printer. So we have a few single points of failure. In my school, as it is a Public school, when we have problems with the network or any ICT device, we can contact a company that is subcontracted by the Government. The problem is that they have very few technical people to attend a great area, so it lasts a lot to solve problems. Government allows schools (if we can afford it) to pay for these services to external companies, but in my experience, they are not so fast either, and it takes you the same time and effort filtering, explaining and guiding them to the problems and paying for it as well.
We don't have so many services as the video shows (no mail, no bring your own device...) , but I think we should investigate how to do backups to increase our security.

Our computer technicians are administering Internet service (file services, email service, data services, security, wireless service) as well as the LAN of our school.

Our system is composed by:

1. two server

2. a router

3. the wireless adapter and APs

4. the firewall

5. some switches that are connected to:

· one server (which is joined by wire connectivity to administrative offices)

· one server (which is joined by wire connectivity to 3 computer labs)

· and the access points [which connect one computer in each classroom, the teachers’ devices and 24 tablets (of the school) that are used by students].

So far, we did not use frequently cloud service and currently we hope to active this too.

We would like to use the cloud to store documents and activities related with e-learning experiences of students and teachers too. For example:

1. on the hand, students will be involved in e-learning activities (as Flipped Classroom, or Collaborative learning, or e-Twinning project) by BYOD;

2. on the other hand, teachers will be involved in training activities by using Moodle platform, webinars, fora (forums) and so on.

In relation to these activities, the idea of Hermann about possible partners is very interesting for us.

The computer department in our town works with a company named Þekking. They take care of the servers and take backups and work with other technical stuff for the schools in the town.

Luckily we do have outside support to maintain our network and advice on any upgrades needed. They visit once a week or more often if required. They maintain the servers ( we have two) and the daily backup. We also do a weekly manual back up of both servers. They also deal with any maintenance issues in the computer labs and classrooms that are beyond my capabilities.
I schedule the weekly checks that need to be carried out - we are a big busy school (like all schools) There is never enough time to do everything yourself.

We do have an external support to check out connectivity concerns. This support is paid by the school. This service is not sufficient to guarantee a fully functional system. We have many work to do.

We are using the VMWare system .... one of the first schools in Ireland to use such a system and it is very similar to this. Each user has an individual account, each account is a virtual account based on a cloned copy of a master virtual computer. The accounts cannot get a virus, they can be accessed from anywhere and administration can customise the user account based on the needs of the student. (One group of students can access one program and others might not need it) It is a cost effective system as students can use any cheap device as the server does the computational work. We no longer need to buy new PC's ..... a potential savings of €'000's !!!!

In our school we have a system controled by our Autonomous Comunity that have a company who helps us to solve the problems when they are big problems they come to our school to remove or change the hardware. But for short problems we talk with and informatic ingenieer in our Teacher Center who by a phone call let me know what to do if the problem is something about software.
It's difficult and sometimes I feel alone.

Currently, we do no work with local industry or locak public service authorities however a number of years ago we did work with a local college of education , they advised us on possible ICT developments and administration. However , with recession this facility had to be withdrawn.
