I chose my college for a variety of reasons. I didn't want to be too close to home and University of Michigan Ann Arbor was about 1.5 hours away from home which seemed perfect. Secondly, I chose it for the academics. I wanted to go to one of the best schools around. I did NOT know what I wanted to do with my life yet but I knew that UofM offered a lot of programs of interest and that it would give me a chance to find what I wanted to do. Lastly, of the colleges I looked at and I looked at several, it was just the one that stood out to me as being above the rest. I went on a tour and loved it. I had always been a fan of Go Blue and I felt that it would be the most like home.

I attended Hope College. I have 3 older siblings and had seen quite a few colleges by the time I graduated from high school. I knew I wanted to play volleyball in college and, at the time, I was interested in working in the science field (possibly as a dietician). I knew Hope College was strong in the sciences. My brother also went to Hope. This factored into the decision as well. After visiting a few campuses multiple times, Hope just felt like the right fit. The school was far enough away from home, but not too far. I think everyone's decision is based on different factors: playing volleyball and majors I wanted to pursue.

I have attended 3 universities and 1 college in the United States. The first college, United States International University of San Diego, chose me even before I had graduated high school. The ballet master and mistress of the dance department worked with me in a workshop in Chicago. When they saw me perform their piece, they offered me a scholarship to attend U.S.I.U., and invited me to train and perform with the International Ballet (the university's semi-professional, traveling ballet company). Thanks to the offer, I graduated high school a semester early (since I had enough credits), and flew to San Diego to begin training, performing and studying. It was thrilling! And since I had just turned 17, it felt scary too. I'm so happy I was brave enough to accept the offer.

First, NMU offers an outstanding teacher preparation program, and receiving a high-quality education was a top priority for me. Having a strong, supportive relationship with my family made this arrangement ideal for me, as it provided the comfort of home alongside a top-notch educational experience.

Go Cats!

After high school, I chose to work for a few years at first. I wanted to go into teaching, but I was a quiet student and some people thought teaching wouldn't be a good fit. I wanted to write, but everyone said there was no career to be made from writing.

I started off as a payroll accountant at a small printshop near my hometown. My grandfather was an accountant and a tax preparer, so I had learned a lot from him already and also took accounting in high school, so I had a basic working level to get into an accounting position. After that, I took a position as an assistant teacher with Head Start. When that position went through layoffs, I started working at a Montessori school and from there decided I really wanted to stay in the field of education.

I started taking college classes and a local community college, Delta, and commuted throughout the week, while continuing to work. When I finished that degree, I transferred to Saginaw Valley State University and continue to commute between my parent's house and SVSU while also working. I chose Delta and SVSU because they were close to where my parents lived, as well as my grandparents, and I was able to stay with family and help care for my grandparents before they passed away while attending college. I also knew SVSU had a great education program, which was important to me, and they also allowed most of my credits from Delta to transfer over so I wouldn't have to take as many classes.

After I graduated from SVSU, I moved to north-west Michigan from central Michigan, and began working as an assistant teacher, then took a lead teacher position in preschool. I taught preschool for quite a few years before teaching elementary, middle school and eventually high school. I also chose to go back and get two Masters degrees, one in Reading and one in Special Education from Spring Arbor University. I chose Spring Arbor because they offered one of the only online options in my area, and living in a rural area, I needed something virtual.

Along with teaching, I've also done a lot of writing on the side, which is a passion of mine. I've been published in newspapers and blogs, and in someone else's book, and hope to publish my own books one day soon. Looking back, I wish I had followed my passions sooner (teaching and writing) but at the same time, my choices have taken me on an incredible journey where I've been able to meet some really cool people and learned so much along the way!

I decided to go to community college right after high school because I wasn't sure what I wanted to major in. After talking to a lot of family and friends I realized that community college is a good choice. It's less expensive and you can take your general education courses while deciding what you want to major in. After attending Delta College for 2 years I transfered to SVSU (Saginaw Valley State University) and majored in art and English and pursued my teaching certification.

My next degree was a Master's Degree in Education from Spring Arbor University, and I picked that school because back then it was one of the only online options. Now I'm working on a second master's degree and I attend ASU!

Choosing a school can be overwhelming but talk to a lot of people and try to visit campuses! We have a lot of great schools in Michigan. Walking around on campus can really give you a good feel of what it would be like to spend your days there.

Trade schools are a great option too! Furthering your education is fun, no matter what route you choose. We are all here to help!

Ms. Piotrowski
