Mana Māori (power, enhancement, pride)
Pronounce kia ora correctly and with enthusiasm, it raises the mana of the language for both the speaker and the listener. This creates an acceptance of speaking te reo Māori anywhere.When we enhance mana, we add value. We give back. Where there is no care, there is no mana.

Mārama Pū (clarity, understanding, inspiration)
Aligned to the principle of mana is that of mārama pū, the principle that one considers all the speakers and listeners thoughts, feelings and attitudes to ensure their mana is enhanced. To enhance the mana of te reo Māori and the wider community, you need to know the potential reactions from the culture you seek to draw from. It requires a willingness to pull down our barriers and be truly open to understand that cultures have layers of meaning that may not be apparent to the casual observer.

 

Manaakitanga (generosity, giving back, caring, unity)
Establishing a reciprocal relationship with a Māori community as an appropriate way to acknowledge the use of Māori cultural concepts as part of a commercial project. The process of sharing, giving and enhancing relationships. Of giving more than taking.

With trust, opens up pathways of understanding, which leads to mana enhancing solutions.Māori want to know that if knowledge is shared, it is enhanced, not diminished.

Breuer moved to New York City in 1946 and thereafter attracted numerous major commissions: the Sarah Lawrence College Theatre, Bronxville, New York (1952); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Headquarters, Paris (1953–58; with Pier Luigi Nervi and Bernard Zehrfuss); St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota (1953–61); De Bijenkorf department store, Rotterdam (1955–57); the International Business Machines (IBM) research centre, La Gaude, France (1960–62); and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City (completed 1966); and the headquarters for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Washington, D.C. (1963–68). He retired from practice in 1976.

Why does the cafe exist?
Commission a fitout design for a pop-up shipping container café as part of Hamilton’s “Te Ruru Light Festival” using Marcel Brueur as the inital design inspiration. Inclusion of identifying Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.

Why has the cafe become such a popular social spot?
The coffee shop remains one of the best places for people to gather and discuss their ideas and beliefs, especially when the establishment shares those ideas through their ethics.

The most successful coffee shops have a range of ethical beliefs that underpin their business and promote them through their actions in the community and further afield.

Cafes have a relaxed and open feel compared to restaurants, pubs and fast-food chains.

People are now looking to improve their work-life balance and also how they do work in the first place. This demand is why many people, particularly those with flexible jobs or self-employment, look towards the relaxed atmosphere of coffee shops as places to conduct business. A good coffee shop will create a warm, homely feel, yet at the same time create spaces where people can sit and work in relative privacy. This balance is why the coffee shop has overtaken places such as libraries, becoming the go-to location for those freelancing or working out of the office. 

Now more than ever, people are ditching quick and easy coffee in search of great flavours and unique ideas. People are now excited to try coffee drinks from across the world and are eager to travel to their favourite coffee shops for these experiences.

Research during the COVID-19 pandemic also indicated that people are now much more conscious of where they are spending their money, moving away from easy-access places and towards smaller, local, ethics-led businesses.

Who goes to the cafe?
Due to the inspiration of my cafe being Marcel Breuer, his designs and structures are rather bold, and rough in materials used, such as concrete. Therefore, the target audience for my cafe is the range of 18-30 year olds who will appreciate the inspiration behind the design of the cafe, as younger children would not be as interested and older people may be annoyed by customers lingering around artwork while waiting for food. 

What can you order?
Cabinet food, savouries, slices, fresh salads (to represent the Matariki harvest). 
Hot drinks will have designs of stars served on top of them where possible (e.g. hot chocolate, lattes etc)

Where can people sit?
The will be outside seating at tables with chairs around them. There will also be seating inside the cafe 

What does the cafe look like and feel like?
The cafe will have a muted black, white, silver and gold colour scheme to represent Marcel's architecture style, and also the link to stars to correlate to Matariki and the Te Ruru light festival.
