Chapter 5 symbolism roundup by Andrea Burman

There are TONS of great symbols throughout Chapter 5 - with your partners or on your own, post 3-5 symbols from that chapter. Name the symbol, give the quote, and briefly explain what you think it symbolizes. Be ready to share! DO A DIFFERENT POST PER SYMBOL. I'll give you extra credit if you go over 5 symbols!

"And Tralfamadorians don't see human beings as two-legged creatures either. They see them as great millipedes, "with babies' legs at one end and old people's legs at the other," says Billy Pilgrim." (87)

This quote is a symbol for how the Tralfamadorians see time. They see every moment of it at once showing that everyone is both dead and alive at the same time for the Tralfamadorians. Billy adopts this way of thinking to ease the pain he feels from witnessing so much death in the war. He starts to believe that each person is still alive, reliving every moment of their lives, for all of time. Dying and living again and again.

This view of them could show the insignificance of humans compared to Tralfamadorians when comparing their different views of time. As humans are stuck with a definite past, present, and future while the Tralfamadorians are "unstuck" in time. The legs going from babies legs to old peoples legs shows how humans age and travel through time in a linear path.

He was thrown into environments which put his life on the line similar to when he was forced to fight in the war. Though he might have survived many of these situations, the trauma continues to pile onto him, causing him to get farther and farther from reality. He cannot escape his fears and will always remain a fearful child as he travels through time.

He was sure that he was going to fall in" (Vonnegut 113)

Here, the canyon symbolizes how Billy Pilgrim's life is inevitable and there is nothing he can do to change the events of his life. Canyons are very deep and sometimes always seem bottomless. When one begins to fall, they do not stop until they hit the ground. This reflects Billy's life because he is always in that constant state of falling and in fear of when it will all end. Billy keeps jumping from moment to moment and he is forced to watch his life replay over and over again without having the ability to change anything.

The Germans found him to be one of the most screamingly funny things they had seen in all of World War Two" (Vonnegut 90).

The coat symbolizes how he is not prepared to go into war and how his life is "messy." But to everyone else, especially the Germans, they find him a joke. The coat has bullet holes and this can symbolize how the coat represents that Billy is not made for war. Just as the coat is limp and worn down, Billy is also limp and worn down from the war and the coat only brings out this meaning more.

The tag was like a sat cracker, perforated down its middle so that a strong man could snap it in two with his bare hands" (Vonnegut 92).

In this quote, the delicate dogtags (being compared to a cracker) symbolize how delicate Billy's own existence is. Even though he is living through the war, his life can be ended with the blink of an eye and snapped right in half just like the dogtag. Billy also realizes that in the human's shallow view of the world, people will believe that the dogtags are all that is left of Billy after his death.

"It was in this setting that the evening's entertainment would take place, a musical version of Cinderella, the most popular story ever told" (Vonnegut 96).

Cinderella is a beacon of change, she was able to escape her once meek life and become something better. All of the men, especially Billy, feel stuck in their lives, they cannot change the horror that has become their lives. Each man feels powerless, unlike Cinderella, who was able to take control over her life. This lack of control contributes to the Tralfamadorian's notion that there is no such thing as free will, it is all an illusion on earth.

(88)

This quote symbolizes two things.
First, it shows how the Tralfamadorians' books write about many events that might not relate together to put together a complex scene. The canyon can be seen as a symbol of war or separation, as it is a drastic gap between two different sides of a land mass. However, he still cares about the end result of earth and asks if there is any way to prevent the demise of mankind. Once he is assured that it is a point in time that has to remain, Billy has the thought of 'so it goes' again. This thought process is a clear depiction of how when something/someone dies, instead of being devastated he accepts it as a thing that has happened and he cannot change. This relates back to Billy's PTSD and how he avoids confrontation with things that scare him or emotionally hurt him in any way.

There are always moments that are more exciting than others or depressing, but life is always changing. Furthermore, Billy also explains that he was tied down to the flatcar and he could only see through a small dot at the end of a pipe. This ties in the Tralfamadorian perspective of life into the human perspective of life. Humans think that life has its up's and down's but the ability to make choices to change your future makes it worth living. However, Billy being tied down and only being able to see a little reflects how Tralfamadorians believe that there is no free will and that everyone is just along for the ride and has no say in what is happening around them.

His mother touched him, and he wet his pants" (89).

The canyon symbolizes how Billy is afraid of the things in his life. He got so scared when his mother touched him which demonstrates he has never felt safe. This shows how his life is so unexpected and he never knows what is going to happen.

As Cinderella was powerless against her step mother and sisters, Billy too was powerless against his peers and opposing military forces.

"There is no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, no effects. What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen all at one time" (88).

The Tralfamadorians concept of time shown in their books is similar to Billy's. The Tralfamadorians explain that there is "no beginning, no middle, no end" or in Billy's case, there is no past, present, or future. In their books, all moments are seen at the same time. This represents Billy because he is constantly revisiting old memories and moments, whether they are good or bad.

The water was dead. So it goes. Air was tying to get out of that dead water. Bubbles were clinging to the walls of the glass, to weak to climb out" (Vonnegut 101).

This quote discusses about how Billy is on the wrong path/direction by how it illustrates that their are multiple cigarettes. In addition, this quote states about the air that's struggling to get out of the water which symbolizes how Billy's trying to get out of the mess that he made in his life.

"It was full of bullet holes. Billy Pilgrim dressed himself. He put on the little overcoat, too." (Vonnegut 90)

This symbolizes how Billy sees the war different from others. Billy's view is shown from the coat. The coat is full of bullet holes and is totally worn down, but he just thinks that its a regular coat and its fine. "Sure it has a few bullet holes but its fine", but in reality others see it as a dirty coat with tons of bullet holes in it. When it says that Billy dressed himself it gave more of an emphasis that he knew what he was wearing and I guess normalized war and bullet holes because he went through it and was face to face with it even though he wasn't ready for it.

No life- "They had not seen a woman or a child for four years or more. They hadn't seen any birds, either. Not even sparrows would come into the camp" (Vonnegut 93).

This quote symbolizes and expresses how horrible war is. War is such a scary and destructive event/place that even birds that live everywhere and fly in the sky 24/7, were never seen in war. The soldiers have not been able to see any other kind of life other than the soldiers next to them and their enemies. The last line of the quote is especially significant and symbolizes that absolutely no life, even the most common bird, would not cross such unimaginable danger like war. Sparrows are the most widely distributed wild bird in the world, found on 6/7 continents. This symbolizes that these soldiers were the only living creatures brave enough to face danger such as war.

Billy's burning coat- "Billy Pilgrim was on fire, having stood too close to the glowing stove. The hem of his little coat was burning. It was a quiet, patient sort of fire-like the burning of punk. Billy wondered if there was a telephone somewhere. He wanted to call his mother, to tell her he was alive and well" (Vonnegut 97).

This quote symbolizes Billy's carefree personality and numb soul. Even though he saw himself catching on fire, his first instinct wasn't to put it out, it is like he didn't care if he was burned. He simply ignored it and thought about something completely different, as if his clothes are not burning in that moment. It was almost like Billy was numb and careless when he sees danger, maybe because he thinks that if he is burning, or gets shot, he will never be dead, so what is the point of making a big deal. Instead of reacting quick to put out the fire, his first thought was to get a phone and call his mom. It wasn't until one of the men he was with put the fire out for him with Billy still not being stunned or frightened.

Giraffes- "Under morphine, Billy had a dream of giraffes in a garden. The giraffes were following gravel paths, were pausing to munch sugar pears from treetops. Billy was a giraffe, too. He ate a pear... The giraffes accepted Billy as one of their own, as harmless creature as preposterously specialized as themselves" (Vonnegut 99).

This quote symbolizes Billy Pilgrim's innocence and his sweet character. Billy could have dreamt of the horrible things in war, but he always finds pleasure and peace in innocent and sweet things. Billy feels that he can relate with this innocence in the way that in the dream, he too was a giraffe. He was free from everything bad and was eating a sugar pear with other giraffes, having no worries at all. It is thought that someone who has come back from war would be completely different and only think about horrific things, but that is not the case with Billy. Billy is not phased by some things he saw in war, and loves and admires anything innocent. His dream of the giraffes is the ultimate example of someone who is too innocent to accept the harsh reality.

Rosewater's thought- "He said that everything there was to know about life was in The Brothers Karamazov, by Feodor Dostoevsky. 'But that isn't enough any more,' said Rosewater" (Vonnegut 101).

This quote symbolizes how the world is always changing and how there is always something new to learn. There will never be a point in time where someone knows everything about life, because anything can happen in a split second that can alter the course of other events following, forever. Billy and Rosewater both feel the need to learn about what they went through in war, and with this book, feel the need to have a good grasp on what life is. Everyday the world is changing and everyday new things are being created. So, it is ok to never know everything in life because that is how humans grow as a person, and learn from their experiences and mistakes.

Tralfamadorians' Know Everything in Life- "'If you know this', said Billy, 'isn't there some way you can prevent it? Can't you keep the pilot from pressing the button?'
'He has always pressed it, and he always will. We always let him and we always will let him. The moment is structured that way'" (Vonnegut 117).

This quote symbolizes the Tralfamadorians smart way of thinking. Billy found out that the Tralfamadorians know everything that happens in life, and that they always blow up the universe due to a mistake. It would make sense for the aliens to tell the pilot to stop pressing the button, but what they are trying to say is that every time this is going to occur, they always give a chance for the pilot to not make his mistake. Hopefully, he would have learned by now what his mistake does, but this symbolizes how humanity is always given opportunities time and time again, but time and time again fail to take them, or always make mistakes, never learning from the past. Everyday we are given another chance to start new and learn from our mistakes, but it is just structured that way that humans are incapable of not making mistakes.
