The British occupied the territory of Ghana from 1492 until their independence in 1957. During this time the British used this land to for its wealth in Gold and for slavery. This left the country of Ghana with a small group of young to middle age working men so at first they had no real way to start a government or grow in their economy. The British also stripped a large part of the resources from this land leaving the land and the people in poverty.

During Imperialism the country of Ghana was called the Gold Coast colony. This was a British colony on the Gulf of Guinea until their independence in 1957. It was first in 1482 when the Persians arrived to trade along the coast. Before long many countries began to trade in this area and the Gold Coast became a prominent country. It was called the Gold Coast because of the abundance of the gold resource that was found there. It can be inferred that without the large supply of gold in the area, Ghana would not have been as good of a port for countries to trade and the British as well as Ghana may have not made as much money.

There are three major water sources in Ghana which are Lake Volta, the Black Volta River, and the White Volta. The largest mountain in the region is Mount Afadja which is 2,904 feet high. These features provide drinking sources for the people of Ghana as well as good flat lands to live.

The Ashanti Empire was an Akan empire that ruled from 1670 until 1957 when Ghana gained its independence. The empire gained its independence from the British in 170. The capital was Kumasi and the official language is Ashanti. The empire controlled the Eastern, Western, Greater Accra, Central, and Brong-Ahafo regions. At its height, the population was 3 million and they owned 100,000 s. mi. of land. Overall this empire seemed very successful and was probably a leading cause of Ghana gaining independence in 1957.

In the past Ghana has had to deal with many issues. For example, they had trouble with national unity and Authoritarian regimes and military leaders as political figures. This created an Authoritarian type of government in the early creation of the country. More current problems include the relatively low literacy rates for women at only 58%. This shows the females may have less education than males and will have lower percentages of higher end jobs. Additionally, more than half of Ghana's population is made up of subsistence farmers. Unfortunately, lack of government regulations, farming subsidies, poor marketing facilities, and bad farming practices has lead to poverty for the farmers while executives get rich. Ghana has also had problems with HIV and AIDS diseases but an increase in sex education has helped to deal with this widespread problems. Finally, many political leaders are corrupt in one way or another leading to no real progress in fixing many widespread issues.

This is mainly due to the lack of supervision or management of small-scale gold mining.
