         <title>4. Assistive Technologies for Developmental Delay - Amy King</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Physical Developmental Delays<br>Delays could occur in children's fine motor skills and can cause difficulties with holding a pencil and writing.<br>Assistive Technologies could range from no tech playdough, lacing and threading activities, or sticker worksheets for hand and finger strengthening, to high tech apps like 'Bugs &amp; Buttons', an app that children need to pinch and grab the bugs, encouraging the use of the pincer grip.<br><br>2. Cognitive Developmental Delays<br>These delays can cause children to struggle to remember things like their daily routines and they find it difficult to pay attention.<br>Assistive Technologies include visual schedules in the classroom detailing what lessons are coming at what times, the use of a physical or online calendar or organizer, or apps for memory development like 'Cognition Coach' or for concentration like 'Shape Puzzle HD'.<br><br>3. Social / Emotional Development Delays<br>Children might not understand their own feelings and emotions, or those of others. They struggle to manage their behavior and to make relationships with others.<br>Some assistive technologies could be some simple breathing and mindfulness exercises to get in touch with their emotions and begin to understand their feelings. There are many apps and videos with guided meditations. There is a kid-friendly app called 'Social Stories' that has customizable stories that help children to better understand social situations.<br><br>4. Communication Developmental Delays<br>These children might find articulation and pronunciation difficult, they might struggle to make certain sounds or to communicate at all.<br>Assistive technologies again, can range from no tech picture boards where children can point to pictures to communicate rather than having to speak, to high tech systems of text-to-speech applications like 'SayIt!'.<br><br>References:<br>Hope, R.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Epilepsy is a reason for receiving special education services under the IDEA - OHI category of disability.&nbsp; Epilepsy causes seizures which interrupt learning. Now there is assistive technology that can be used by students who have epileptic seizures. Seizure detectors, there are many devices that can detect seizure activity, monitor, alarms, wearable devices and smart watches, and safety sensors that can detect movement, heart rate, breathing patterns or sounds associated with seizures. These devices can send alerts to parents and teachers as soon as a seizure is detected.&nbsp;<br>Other devices detect falls that happen during seizures.<br>Assertive technology is usually devices that help students with epilepsy monitor their medication, and are accessible on smart devices that help with medication reminders.&nbsp;<br><br><em>What devices are available to assist with epilepsy?</em> (n.d.).          <description><![CDATA[<div>Having diabetes can make school very challenging especially for young children k-6. Children who have diabetes have to manage their blood sugar properly. Students can get blurry vision and high blood sugar can make them very thirsty and need to urinate frequently interrupting their education. Teachers need to be able to know&nbsp; how a student with this disease is doing at all times . There is an application called<strong> Nightscout project</strong>, it helps teachers by transmitting the data from a child's <strong>CGM</strong>( continuous glucose monitoring system) to the teachers mobile device and anyone else with application downloaded to their phone.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>What is Emotional Disturbance?<br></strong><br></div><div><strong>Emotional disturbance</strong> is a condition that, for a long period of time and to a large degree, affects a child's ability to learn and succeed, both educationally and interpersonally. An emotional disturbance definition is not complete without listing a few ways it can manifest itself, including:<br><br></div><ul><li>Problems learning that can not be attributed to an intellectual or health issue.</li><li>Inability to form appropriate social relationships with peers and teachers.</li><li>Behaviors or feelings that are difficult to control.</li><li>Depression or a similar mood disorder.</li><li>Anxiety from school or personal issues that cause physical symptoms.</li></ul><div><br></div><div><strong>Symptom of Emotional Disturbance:</strong></div><div><br></div><ul><li><strong><em>External Behavior Symptoms:</em></strong> Severe, prolonged aggression is one example of this. Hyperactivity and impulsivity are also outward manifestations, along with temper tantrums and even self-harm.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li><strong><em>Internalized Behavior Symptoms: </em></strong>Uncontrolled anxiety or fears, or distorted thinking are examples, as is an inability to cope with normal situations or emotions. Mood swings, depression or excessive daydreaming are also signs of emotional disturbance disorder.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li><strong><em>Academic Symptoms:</em></strong> A child or adolescent who suffers from an emotional disturbance disorder may show academic symptoms and perform below grade level in school despite normal intelligence. Inattentiveness or a short attention span at school are also common symptoms.</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li><strong><em>Social Symptoms: </em></strong>Aggression, fighting, or crying at inappropriate times are also signs of an emotional disturbance disorder. Students with this disorder are often withdrawn and struggle to relate to or interact with peers.</li></ul><div><br></div><div>Emotional disturbance affect students' academic performance by increasing the potential frustration during learning. It also cause the behavior issues in dealing with others.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>What is Intellectual Disability?</strong><br><br>Intellectual disability refers to individuals who have neurodevelopmental defects shown through limitations in intellectual functioning, such as in reasoning, planning, problem solving, abstract thinking, learning at school, or from personal experience, and adaptative reasoning - which is the ability to meet age and sociocultural appropriate standards for independent functioning in activities of daily life (Sulkes, 2022) (Byrd, n.d.). There are four levels of Intellectual disability with each increasing in severity - mild, moderate, severe, profound&nbsp; (Johnson, 2012). <br><br>Some of the common signs of a child has intellectual disability are the following: learning to talk comparatively later than other children or struggling to talk, a lack of ease with grasping social rules and a poor memory&nbsp; (CDC, 2019).<br><br><strong>Accommodations for Intellectual Disability<br><br></strong>Intellectual disability is traditionally treated through early intervention programs and a multidisciplinary team support that composes of neurologists, physical therapists, and psychologists among others&nbsp; (Sulkes, 2022). Allow work to be completed on an in-depth study of a few texts rather than a broad study of many.</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Whenever you are introducing procedures or processes or giving directions, for example in a laboratory or computing exercise, ensure that stages or sequences are made clear and are explained in verbal as well as written form.</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Students may benefit from using assistive technology.</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Use as many verbal descriptions as possible to supplement material presented on blackboard or overhead</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Use clear, succinct, straightforward language.</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Reinforce learning by using real-life examples and environments.</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Present information in a range of formats – handouts, worksheets, overheads, videos – to meet a diversity of learning styles.</blockquote></li><li><blockquote>Use a variety of teaching methods so that students are not constrained by needing to acquire information by reading only.
