For this exercise, we are viewing these songs through the concept or lens of perspective. Maybe they share our perspective. Perhaps they give us another perspective. Whatever the case, listen with a keen ear and an open mind.

I've placed the songs on a timeline because the timeframe between early March 2020 and the present (late June 2020) shows the progression from *just* the quarantine to the death of George Floyd and the societal upheaval and shift that has followed. If anyone can benefit from another perspective, it's us and it's now.

April 14, 2020 - Luke Combs "Six Feet Apart"

This was the first song that I heard during quarantine and I'll never forget how it encapsulated exactly what I was feeling at the moment. I would have exchanged "corner booth" for "a glass of wine on a patio" though. ;) As I mentioned before, this song was the perfect song for mid-April. Had it come out in mid-June it would have been irrelevant and Combs would have been criticized for missing the point of what was currently going on in the world. As it is, we can appreciate this song for its time and perspective, but the sentiments seem shallow from a late-June 2020 perspective.

March 22/April 22, 2020 - Bon Jovi "Do What You Can"

Bon Jovi began writing this song in March, but he completed it (with listener's input) and released to YouTube on April 22, 2020. Listening from the perspective of late June 2020, both this song and the Luke Combs song sound innocent and nostalgic. In March and April people were beginning to understand the ramifications of the quarantine and realize all of the things they would be missing. Is the fact that Bon Jovi solicited experiences from his fans effective? Does it make the appeal broader?

June 2, 2020 - Mickey Guyton "Black Like Me"

Perspective plays a huge role in how this song is heard. As a white woman, I listen with an ear open to a life experience different from my own. From the vocal quality, to the melancholy melody, my heart breaks as I take in the sentiment "if you think we live in the land of the free, then you should try to be black like me." Guyton uses first person POV and specific personal experiences to share her story, and the picture painted is somewhat more stark than Kane Brown's. Whatever one's perspective, this song will resonate and hopefully allow the listener to either be heard or have a shift in perspective.

June 4, 2020 - Kane Brown "Worldwide Beautiful"

Kane Brown is country singer who is also African American. Considering he is in a category that includes fewer than 10 people, he definitely has a perspective different from most his audience. He had been "sitting" on this song for a while and he felt June was the right time to release it. This song's goal is to share his perspective on the race situation in as positive and gentle a way as possible. While the song may be seen by some to be a lightweight in the overall racism conversation going on right now in the US, because he knows his audience, he uses third person language to effect a perspective shift in his listeners.
