         <title>The Imo</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Imo is the United Nation agency wich establishes the international rules dealing with different aspect of maritime transport and safety.<br>It has its headquarters in London,and is organised into a series of committees and sub-committees wich deal with different subject.<br>In 1960 th first conference organised by IMO dealt with safety and adopted the international SOLAS Convention. It became the basic instrument for dealing with safety at sea and covered a wide range of measures.<br>One of the amendments of SOLAS was the Inmarsat convention in 1976,this convention introduced the use of the International Maritime Satellite System.<br>In 1979 the IMO introduced the SAR. It was designed to provide a global system for responding to emergencies at sea. The convention divide the world's water into 13 search and rescue areas.<br>In 1988 was introduced the GMDSS( Global Maritime and Distress Safety System),that combines the use of conventional radio facilities with satellite communication system based on the Inmarsat satellite constellation. <br>In 1973 was adopted the MARPOL convention for the prevetion of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.<br>It introduce the "crude oil washing" technique to clean the oil tanks,and particular building requirements such as protected ballast tanks.<br>In 1972 the IMO issued the COLREG convention,these regulations had the purpose of avoiding collisions at sea and included the Traffic Separation Schemes to regulate the passage of vessels in areas where the maritime the particulary congested.<br>The 1978 STCW Convention was the first to estabilish basic requiments on training,certification and watchkeeping for seafarers on an international level</div>]]></description>
