I am currently involved in a class where I am observing a real teacher here in the Manhattan area. I am in a 5th grade classroom and when I saw this assignment I started thinking about some of the things that I remember when I was in 5th grade. One of these things, which was one of my favorites, was the Revolutionary War. This topic is also a state standard for 5th grade so it fits perfectly. These reasons are why I chose this particular topic.

Affordances:

This book is a great book with valid historical context. It is told in a narration that is engaging for students to read or listen to. The book contains maps, illustrations, and images that would also keep the audience engaged. The strategies of war are simplified for the younger audience to understand. The book is 96 pages making it a lighter read for students.

Limitations:

The book mainly covers the Battle of Trenton leaving out other significant battles that are within the whole war itself. There is a level of intensity that some younger readers might struggle with.

Affordances:

This story is an entertaining story from the get-go. The beginning chapter is in action and leaves you will a cliff hanger wondering what is going to happen. This book is a fictional book told by a child who was forced into war. This is very interactive because my students can relate to the child as they are around that age as well. This book is also a lower page (144) easier read so it is a great follow-along for the entire class.

Limitations:

While it is a fun and entertaining book it leaves out some context about what war was really like. It simplifies historical events leaving out some details about the Revolutionary War.

Affordances:

This website allows you to interact and scroll through decades of important dates and tools. There are various tools to look at whether it is guns or people's mugs. you can see the tools and how they have changed throughout the years. You can visualize the weapons that were being used at this time. You can also see important artifacts like the Declaration of Independence.

Limitations:

This timeline is not as interactive as a game or hands-on activity would be. There is very valuable information but can be boring after a while without some guidance from a teacher to keep it active.
