SHL can be caused by many factors and can happen to anybody at any time in their development. It can begin as early as development in the womb. Birth asphyxia, low birth weight, and other perinatal morbidities can cause SHL. Children with chronic ear infections, constant collection of fluid in the ear and meningitis are some causes of adolescent SHL. Head trauma, malnutrition, infections, exposure to loud noises can cause SHL at any age.

Treatment and Classroom Involvement

There are both surgical and nonsurgical treatments to SHL. Some nonsurgical methods to treating SHL is earwax removal, medications to treat chronic infections, assistive listening devices that can work in tandem with a hearing aid or on their own to enhance certain sounds such as doorbells. Some surgical treatments that can reduce the effects of SHL are Ear Tube Surgery, which treats chronic ear infections by installing small tubes to drain the middle ear, a Stapedectomy, which treats abnormal bone growth blocking the canal, Bone Conductive Implants which send soundwaves harmlessly through the skull, and Cochlear Implants, which are permanent implants to assist in your hearing. Having a student in the classroom with a hearing impairment means paying more attention to that student without singling them out. Adjust the lesson plan and have the students work in smaller quieter groups so that the child may have a better chance of hearing the lesson and not getting to overwhelmed. Try not to make the classroom a noisy place. This also teaches the children empathy and consideration.
