The topic i selected for this padlet is AI's use in the Entertainment industry. With the rise of the use of AI, many AI tools are becoming very common in multiple sections of the broad entertainment industry. It is used in entertainment content itself (music, movies, shows, games, books, ect.), advertising, creation of content, and more. I selected the entertainment industry because it is an industry that first and foremost encourages creativity, which AI is not known for supplying, creating an interesting dynamic of where it should/shouldn't be used. I also have much experience with multiple sections of the entertainment industry, both of the sides of consuming and creating content, so I can connect to the discussed topics heavily. In this padlet, I will be reviewing the role of AI in entertainment today, where it is used, the impact it has on the industry, ethical concerns of AI in entertainment, and how it may change in the future. It is especially interesting to consider how AI tools can evolve to better assist in the ever-booming entertainment industry, and to also consider the ethical concerns it brings with it. As AI continues to improve more and more becomes possible through it's use. I also believe the creative nature of the entertainment industry mixing with the robotic nature of AI is also interesting to research, because while people may not attribute creativity to the tools themselves, they way they are used can be creative.

Entertainment - AI in Video Content

AI is used frequently in the creation of video content. With the rise of video sharing websites such as YouTube, tools that assist in video creation are very important to the entertainment industry. Various video editing software have built-in AI tools that are meant to assist with the editing process. It can be used to streamline tedious tasks and help enhance the quality too. In some extreme cases AI is even used to make entire videos as well. A fairly well known YouTube creator in the gaming space known as Kwebbelkop recently worked on a project where he would have an AI tool learn from his past videos (visual and audio) and create video content using what it learned. The benefits were that the creation of content became easier, but the quality of the content did take a noticeable dip.

Entertainment - AI in Advertising

Advertising is crucial in the world of entertainment. No matter the medium, all forms of entertainment media are heavily advertised to consumers, all competing against one another for the money of said consumers. In advertising "AI enhances audience targeting by analyzing vast data, predicting behavior, and enabling real-time personalization. It segments users based on behavior, facilitates A/B testing, and optimizes campaigns for better results. AI-driven automation streamlines marketing efforts, making them more cost-efficient and customer-centric" (Takyar 2020). Ai helps to create algorithms that benefit advertisers and users by personalizing the advertisements they receive based on past searches and interest. An issue with this, however, are the privacy concerns that come with advertising algorithms. People may find that AI tracking search histories are a breach of privacy, and these ethical concerns are the main limitation of the technology.

AI has become integrated in the music industry in multiple different facets. First, similar to advertising, AI has been used to create algorithms which recommend music to consumers based on what the consumer is listening to. The pattern recognition of these AI algorithms makes it more convenient for consumers to find new music and for the producers to reach potential customers. Music making programs have also incorporated AI to assist with the music making process. "AI tools further streamline production by automating mixing and mastering processes, significantly expediting high-quality music creation" (Takyar 2020). AI is also being used to make its own music entirely, while a limitation is that the end product is not as refined and polished as a human's music, AI is getting close to replicating music. Copyright is also a huge issue in AI music because AI tools learn from pre-existing music, an ethical concern of plagiarism exists.

As AI tools become more sophisticated, their use becomes more and more accessible and widespread. We have seen with the rise of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and more that AI tools are highly desirable to consumers. Entertainment industry spaces are not exempt from this fact. Generative AI tools for art, music, and videos are becoming more sophisticated, now being able to generate content almost at the level of human created content, with even AI generated video games being explored. With the rapid improvements in these fields, AI is only going to become more popular in these spaces, not even with strictly AI content but also assistance in creating, as mentioned in the other posts. AI assistants in creation programs will only continue to become smarter making content creation more streamlined. AI in the entertainment industry does raise ethical concerns, however. Issues including taking previously human jobs, copyright infringement, and generative deepfake abuse and misuse, a deepfake being an AI generated video or image of another person. Automation poses a threat to artists, writers, and voice actors as AI generated content becomes more polished. Some AI models are trained on copyrighted works, and without consent debates over intellectual property rights become an issue. Also, deepfakes are used for deceptive purposes in some cases, manipulating public perception or creating non-consensual content, which is used in scams. AI algorithms are also commonly biased, reinforcing stereotypes at times, and limiting diversity in storytelling. As AI continues to grow in the entertainment industry; transparency, fair compensation, and ethical guidelines are important to make sure that technology helps creativity rather than exploits it.

Societal Impact

AI in the entertainment industry has great affects on the broader scope of society. Entertainment is a far reaching industry, with close to every person (anecdotally) engaging with some form of entertainment. It is an industry that affects everyone and pop culture is almost entirely rooted in it. AI becoming ever-present in entertainment media means it will most definitely have an impact in culture, and that's not to say it hasn't already. The use of generative AI technology in the industry does unfortunately lead to loss of job positions. Companies would rather not pay employees who do work that an AI can do for free, even if they AI's work is exactly up to the same quality of the human's. Maximizing profits is the goal of corporations, and unfortunately that comes at the expense of laborers. AI has the potential to leave many creatives out of jobs, such as graphic designers, voice actors, video editors, coders and more. It is a concerning reality of the AI landscape. Privacy is also a concern as AI can create content based on learned behavior, and right now there are dilemmas when it comes to consenting to having AI learn from specific things. AI can become an incredible breach of privacy when it learns from individuals and their content without consent, leading to misrepresentation of the individual, plagiarism, and even scams at worst. AI related crimes are becoming more commonplace, with AI creating fake consent from people, creating emails for phishing attacks, or other crimes. The use of AI tools is making it easier to carry out these crimes, leading to many concerns in security and the law.

In creating this padlet, I have learned many things about AI in the entertainment industry. I have learned that AI is ever present in the industry and that it is commonly used as an assistant rather than something that creates content on it's own. I think personally, that is the best way AI can interact with the industry, to boost and assist in creative power rather than try to replace it. I think AI still has a mostly negative impact in the industry however, due to the loss of jobs many creatives are facing in the current landscape. The entertainment industry was always headed by creativity, and the use of AI feels non-authentic in my own opinion.
