ENG department faculty wish we would spend more time with teaching students how to read these, and I think that’s useful, but I don’t think it’s useful to assign requirements for them to use these in the immerse and reflect assignment currently in the FYE course.

Limiting canned example searches in library instruction: these could contribute to unrealistic student expectations re: the ease of searching, and be a source of frustration when it may not work for them the first time. Instead be comfortable taking examples in the moment from students, or lean into examples where searches don’t work to show how to push past the challenges.

I’ve found myself making these moves in my own teaching, and it’s wonderful to find a language for it. A hopefully helpful comment: I’ve found that teaching people about things like information behavior explicitly (cherry picking, the information search process, etc) really connects with them, contextualizes information instruction, and reduces anxiety. Thanks for this!!!
