Differentiating content is critical in order for students to succeed in the classroom. In order to do this correctly, it is important to understand what differentiating content entails. In very basic terminology, differentiating content means that teachers are using different methods of teaching to get the content across to their students. They are not changing the actual content or going away from the necessary standards, they are simply teaching the content in different ways so all students needs are being met. If the teacher does it right, all learners will have some sort of connection to the content, making it meaningful and necessary to learn.

Pear Deck

Pear Deck is a great way to differentiate content for students. As a social studies major, there are going to be times in the classroom when I have to lecture in front of my students. Peardeck makes the lesson very interactive. Students can join the session themselves and interact with the presentation I am going over. This way, students are getting the content in multiple ways. Also, Pear Deck does a great job of breaking up the lecture, so that will help my students truly digest the content, and not zone out.

Edpuzzle can be used to differentiate content as well. Edpuzzle allows the teacher to place question prompts during different timestamps in the video to check for student engagement and understanding. I can pick different videos from the internet based on where students are at in terms of skill level. Students who are struggling could be assigned an easier video and students who are more advanced could be assigned more challenging content. Watching a video and answering questions is yet another great way for students to digest content, and edpuzzle makes it very easy to engage students.

Differentiating student product means allowing your students to present what they have learned in various ways. Students may succeed at different things, so providing them multiple ways to show what they have learned is critical. This means that instead of giving students a simple test, provide them with options to show what they have learned. For an assessment, students could write a paper, make a presentation, or create a video.

Actually, Padlet is a wonderful resource that a teacher can use to give their students a way to differentiate their content. Padlet allows students to create multiple ways to present information. Whether that be in writing, a video, or images, students can use Padlet to create a portfolio of what they have learned. This would be a great resource to use at the end of a unit. Students could create a Padlet as a summation for all the things they have learned over the course of the unit.

Flipgrid is another great tool that provides students an outlet to show what they have learned. Flipgrid is a video platform in which students film videos and upload it for the teacher to see. The great thing about Flipgrid is you can add visuals or music to the video to enhance the experience. Flipgrid gives students multiple ways to be creative with their videos and get their point across of what exactly they have learned. For example, I could ask my students to answer a few questions in a flipgrid at the end of a unit. This will help me see where my students at, and gives students a different way to express their learning.

I feel as though Canva is a great way for students to express what they have learned. Canva provides students with so many templates that can be used by anyone. All of the themes presented by the templates can articulate student thoughts and ideas. Also, it allows students to get creative with it. In my classroom, this would be a wonderful tool that students could be used to present a quick infographic on a topic of their choice. The different templates allow the students to present the information as they wish.

Quizizz is a great tool for teachers to use to differentiate their content. It is a way for the teacher to assess the students on what they have learned through multiple choice questions, short answer, or true false. The great thing about Quizziz is it allows the teacher to modify certain things if need be. In my social studies classroom, I could provide different challenge questions for my students in the Quizizz. This will allow me to see if my students can critically think beyond the standard.

Games in the classroom are a great way to get students engaged. It breaks up the rigid schedule of high school, and can allow students to interact in creative ways. It may motivate students who feel they are in a rut, and do not want sit through yet another class period. Students can show what they have learned through any particular game, so it remains educational. Also, this new outlet is another form of differentiation. In the age we live in, technology has provided so many intriguing games that teachers may use, especially under the social studies umbrella.

World War 1 Simulation Game

This is truly an amazing resource that I will use in my classroom if I teach world history.The simulation uses a variety of historically accurate tools, and allows the students to do their own WW1 simulation in the classroom. The simulation allows students to collaborate, problem solve, and use their critical thinking skills to work as a team. The actual website does a wonderful job of setting up the simulation, and is very pleasing to the eye. Also, the roles that will be given to my students will directly contribute to differentiation in the classroom.

Gimkit is basically Kahoot just with a gaming element. As a teacher, I can prompt the gimkit with questions and it will show up on the computer screens of my students. As students answer the questions correctly, it gives them points to use for different power ups within the game. Gimkit has multiple games for the students to enjoy, so it will not get stale throughout the year. Overall, Gimkit may motivate students to try harder because of the gaming element, and will give students a fun activity that will create a positive classroom environment. It also will help me with future differentiation of my content, as I will see what questions my students were struggling with. With that, I can set them up to learn the necessary information in the best way possible,

This is a pretty fascinating website. It compiles all kinds of games that incorporate social studies into them and puts them into a website. As a social studies teacher, I could see myself using this as a reward for my students. At the end of each week on Friday if we have accomplished a lot in the classroom I could allow my students to play on the wesbite for 30 minutes or something like that. In regards to process in the classroom, the teacher has to do a wonderful job of giving all students an equal chance to learn the information. The reality is, all students are different learners and need different things in the classroom. Some students are hands on, some are auditory, and some are readers. The lesson taught by the teacher needs to incorporate the needs of all learners. If the lessons are able to this, then differentation is being done well. Luckily, there are so many tools that can be used so that no learner is being left behind. Setting your students up for success and not leaving any of them behind is key to differentiating the process in the classroom.

This is wonderful for differentiating process, as it gives the students a chance to use their voice in an assignment. The website also allows students to add images or photos. It allows students to tap into their skills that are not used as much in the traditional classroom.

Google Slides is used by so many people in the education world. In a History classroom, I could make my lectures using Google Slides as the platform. On the google slides, I could put a variety of images displaying pictures that relate to the content, graphs, or attention grabbing photos. I can also easily drop the links to various videos that I can play to help students understand a concept. My students could also use google slides for their own assignments when they needs to display information or present. Overall, Google slides is a platform that will allow me to add visual and audio aids to any lecture, and it will help me convey my knowledge of any social studies topic to my students.

Mentimeter is a wonderful resource, that can also be used to help differentiate process in the classroom. Using Mentimeter, teachers can make their lectures interactive. In the middle of lectures, teachers can prompt questions to pop up on the screen, and have students answer. This helps keep students and engaged, and allows all students to shine in sharing their knowledge of a given topic. Often times, students who give answers in the classroom are the one's who want to participate and not afraid to speak up. Mentimeter flips this process on its head, as all students have an opportunity to share their knowledge, without having to speak up in front of the class and/or teacher.
