America's economy has had many ups and downs throughout the year. Debt keeps getting higher while the unemployment rate is getting lower. The debt in America has increased by $6 trillion since 2008, which is about a 67% growth rate. That's outrageous! Will it ever end? Then there is the debate about if we should raise the minimum wage to $15 dollars per hour. While it seems like the reasonable thing to do to help get money back into the hands of the people, it is more likely to create more problems. The unemployment rate is finally decreasing but if wages increased smaller companies would have to lay people off. This would cause the unemployment rate to skyrocket. It would also cause companies to raise the prices for their product. This would then lead us back into the same boat we thought we were getting out of. People are making more money but they have to also spend more. Then there is the idea floating around about paying adults more for the same job that teenagers are doing. There are two main issues with this system. First off it is unfair to the teenagers because they’re doing the same exact work for a much lower wage. While some teenagers can be a pain in the butt, a lot of them are very hard working and can work harder and faster than adults. Secondly companies would not want to hire adults when they could pay teenagers for less. The companies would need a couple adults to work the daytime hours but after school and weekends it would be mostly teenagers. Adults also expect some sort of benefits and paid time off, while teenagers are still under their parent’s insurance and don’t look for those things when applying for a job.
