Reports are available in seconds, so you can see student understanding immediately.

I plan on using this app in my resource classes to reinforce skills. My special education students have difficulty with motivation. Anything interactive and fun will keep them engaged. The competition factor will also help to keep them motivated. I really like the fact that the struggling students won't feel bad since the students in last place are not visual.
This app is compatible with any device or browser.
Link to tutorial:
m.socrative.com/#create-quiz

1. Best Sand Timer:
Cost: Free
* May want to download Best Timer for $0.99 if you want a clock, stopwatch, hourglass/sand timer and countdown options.

Summary: This digital sand timer gives you numbers and a visual representation. It will time up to 60 minutes and allows you to change colors (five options). Works on iPads and and iPhone.

Use: This app can be used to help students manage their time either as a class or individually. I could see using this to time math fluency with my 5th grade accelerated math students where they each set their timer and try to beat their time on subsequent tries. There are many times I give students 10 minutes to work on something or have silent reading time. It is easy to lose track of this time without the visual reminder the sand timer would give. Finally, with gifted students, I often need to tell them "stop working for now" or they will keep going. The sand timer would help with this, too.

Reflection: I used a digital timer this year for my silent reading and can see where this would be better for the students to know how much (or how little) time they had left. When I went to the tutorial, I had the pleasant surprise of finding the Best Timer alternative that isn't very expensive and offers flexibility of modes of timing. There are competitions we run in Middle School AIM when a stopwatch would be a better choice. I'd definitely have students download the sand timer so that they can use it to help them manage their time more appropriately.

Link: The tutorial link is for Best Timer, but you can just watch the part about the sand timer if need be.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BrClbQAG2Zk

I would input the behaviors on their IEPs and monitor these individuals within the classroom, especially in a co-taught class. The data would also be important to report home to parents and use as a record sheet for IEP information.
I would also use this app for attendance taking, randomly selecting students in my co-taught class, keeping track of who has completed homework in a class and with a class that is having transitioning problems.
Reflection: I have learned to be sensitive to students' feelings and publically praise yet speak to individuals privately on behaviors they may need to work on.
What surprised me is that the symbols used by the student's names can be modified.
I would alter this app to not include the sound as I feel it would be a distraction.
With the findings I would use the data to report to parents and see how effective my teaching style is with how well kids stay on task.
Tutorial link:https://youtu.be/f23bnZaWHNE

2. Stick Pick
Cost: $3.99

Summary: This app allows you to pick students at random by tapping, swiping or shaking the virtual can. It would replace a teacher's can of Popsicle sticks! Stick Pick also has the option of using question starters when you do call on a student. The question starters are based on Bloom's Taxonomy, Bloom's Revised Taxonomy, or ESL; whatever you need for your class. These allow a teacher to differentiate and change levels of questions as they go. Formative assessment data can be collected and progress can be recorded. A teacher can rate responses on a scale of 0 to 5. Teachers have the options of peeking into a can to deliberately call on a student and choosing sticks only without the questions.

Uses: This app will allow a teacher to choose students at random to call on and to choose appropriate question stems once they are called on. This allows for equality when calling on students and for differentiation with types of questions.

Reflection: Because of the options above, I can see this replacing my literal can of sticks. I like both the random fashion of the app which is why I use sticks anyway, but also like that I can peek in and choose a student who may be less engaged or eager to respond. The question stems are a great way to remind myself to ask those higher level questions. I could also see sharing those with students in small groups so that they keep level of their questions at a higher level. Plus the fact that this app keeps track of who has been called on and who hasn't is great. It was always messy to keep sticks separate, especially over the course of a class to call on students equally. I wonder if there is a way to carry the can over to another day or if it starts fresh each time you log into a class.

Link to app:
Stick Pick by Buzz Garwood
https://appsto.re/us/l1ZbA.i
Link to tutorial:

Teacher Assistant

In this PBIS era this app allows for the easy documentation of student behavior - both good and bad plus it allows easy notification to the parent. It can also be used for other purposes - accounting of funds collected from students, send an email blast and it has a randomizer.

Cost: The price is listed as $5.99 but you would want an account for every teacher. I didn't see that a school wide option was available.

Unlike our current PBIS system, students can lose points as well as earn them. Currently we use a combination of a Word.doc form and email to document poor behaviors. Then that form is used to enter data into another school wide tool. This app would allow the collection of data and communication to be a little easier. It is allows for customization in all sorts of ways.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQDyIoiOeOQ

I think I've learned that schools are really struggling with PBIS requirements to document behaviors. This tool is very popular but I was very surprised to learn that it doesn't collect the data school wide for reporting purposes.
Why not is my question.

I doubt I would use this tool simply because it wouldn't eliminate the need to also follow our school wide program. I will mention this app with our PBIS team representative because I doubt any such technology was considered when the program was first designed.

After entering your students, you can add a picture and indicate some demographic data such as gender, ethnici and miscellaneous: 1, 2 or 3 (performance levels).

You can choose to form groups that take into account all, some, or random.
Cost: Free

What appealed to me about this app is the ability to set performance levels within a group. You could put students at the same level together or spread them out. This is very helpful for some tasks like literature groups. It also is useful for applying the data we learn from NWEA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twrmmk4Drfc

I searched for a group maker that allowed for ability levels to be a factor in grouping and it wasn't easy to find. it will involve some set up time as you will need to set the indicator for each student but it is a very effective way to demonstrate that you are using data in your instruction.
It surprised me that there aren't more apps that meet this need.
I plan to use this tool as part of my yearly evaluation to demonstrate data based instruction. I am hoping that such instruction will result in improved scores for the students as I target their weaknesses.

These students have daily point sheets and this would be a great way for me to keep track of their daily, weekly and monthly progress.

3. Socrative
Cost: Free

Summary: This is a teacher initiated formative assessment app that allows a teacher to create and give quizzes, quick question polls, exit tickets and space races. The app will grade, aggregate the data, and create visuals of the results. It works with other Socrative apps and via all browsers. The questions created an be multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended. Quizzes can be shared with other teachers. Reports can be downloaded, emailed, or sent to drive. Students do need to have Socrative Student downloaded on their iPads.

Uses: This is a great way to set up quizzes if they are not heavy on long written answers. Used as a quick check to drive instruction, would be a good app to use. The space races are more of a game-style format that students would enjoy while working on skills or reviewing information. I especially like the exit ticket option to provide students with a quick question or two to be sure they really got the concept or skill we covered in a lesson. While I do this in several ways already, this is another option to add to my "toolbox."

Reflection: Socrative provides another way to create quick formative assessments that is technology based, which students enjoy. I think they would be excited to use this app. It is also a good app for me to use to keep track of what is going on in the core classes. I have a paraprofessional that is in the core classes. I think the teachers will like this because they can set it up in different parts of their room with the iPad for a 'quiter' area. This is one I will share with the elementary teachers.

Quick voice

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quickvoice-recorder/id284675296?mt=8

1. Quick voice is an app that allows you to record memos,
lists, or up to entire lectures. Quick
voice is easy to use for students as they can scroll through different
recordings they have done to listen to or to add on to.

2. Free with in app-purchases

3. I would use this app for conferences. Often it is difficult to explain some of the
reading problem their child is having.
With this app I could record students to play to parents to help them
hear and listen to difficulties their child is having while reading and ways
they could help improve their reading. I
would also use this with students to record themselves. This would work great for helping them work
on their fluency. This would also be
helpful for students to record themselves reading a book for another student to
listen to.

Stick Pick

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stick-pick/id436682059?mt=8

1. Stick pick is a random name generator. If is different from other name selectors in
it that you can differentiate students with different questions to meet their
needs. Questions can be based on bloom’s
taxonomy , ESL skills, and other differentiated levels. It can also be used for formative assessment
data.

2. $3.99

3. I would use stick
pick in the classroom to randomly call on students. This would help for those students who think
they are never called on and for those students who never raise their hands to
participate. I would also use this for
teachers who push into my classroom to see what skill the students are working
on.

Random name selector

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/random-name-selector-pro/id599531491?mt=8

1. Random name selector will
randomly pick students to answer
questions. You can also use it to form
different groups with specified number of students. The app also allows you to exclude students who might be absent or might not be in a
certain group.

2. 3.99

3. I would use this
app for choosing students but also for vocabulary lessons. Instead of
using student names I could use vocabulary words for the week to pop up
for the students to read. An alternative
to just having the words hung up around the classroom.

1. 30/30 help with classroom time management. It is simple for the students to read how
much time has passed and how much time they have left for a particular
task. It allows you to set multiple
tasks with different times for an array of activities.

2. Free

3. I would use 30/30 during my Daily 5 time. With so many groups and activities going on

for transtions. I also like that you can

I would use this app for my students who struggle with staying on task while completing an assignment. While students are independent reading, I will ask for a reading response about the book or article they are reading. They will set their timer for 20 minutes when they start reading, and once the hour glass is empty they will know when it is time to transition into their reading response. This will allow for the teacher to continue to work with their small guided reading group without any distractions.

Class Dojo

This app is a classroom management tool. ClassDojo allows teachers to gather more data about individual students and give them feedback nearly instantaneously. Teachers can use a phone, tablet or computer and walk around the classroom with the app open, privately awarding and subtracting points. Each student’s points can be displayed, and teachers can generate reports to send home to parents. Points could also be used for rewards. Students design their own avatar as part of the buy-in.

Cost: Class Dojo proudly boasts that it will always be free to teachers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl4Sslf4kko

On the surface I like the ease at which this app allows me to collect data on classroom behavior.

At first I was very intrigued by Dojo. It seems like a good fit with our PBIS program, but after doing this research I found significant push-back by experts and parents. First of all there is the displaying of points. This seems like a very, excuse the pun, old school method of classroom management. Very unnecessary, but apparently some teachers did it. This entire system is based on extrinsic motivation. By middle school you want students to be intrinsically motivated. I was surprised to learn that there are even accusations of teaching blind obedience and mindless compliance.

My questions would be for school administration. Do they support the use of this app? Do they want to set some guidelines. I see this app as possibly creating conflict between the school and parents. Parents also would need to be educated as to how it is used in the classroom.
Using it only to reward the positive is also not real world learning. Finally if school administration doesn't use the data collected - why collect it? We already spend time collecting similar data but we don't really apply it in a meaningful way.
