Twenty one-year-old photographer Edward Honaker documents his own depression in powerful self-portraits. The series of black and white images illustrates the photographer’s experience with depression and anxiety.

In an attempt to raise awareness of the topic, Honaker says about the project: “Mental health disorders are such a taboo topic. If you ever bring it up in conversation, people awkwardly get silent, or try to tell you why it’s not a real problem. When I was in the worst parts of depression, the most helpful thing anyone could have done was to just listen to me – not judging, not trying to find a solution, just listen. I’m hoping that these images will help open up conversation about mental health issues. Everyone is or will be affected by them one way or another, and ignoring them doesn’t make things better.”

John Rankin Waddell, working name Rankin, born 1966, is an English portrait and fashion photographer.

Rankin's "destroy" project was a concept which involved teaming up with a children's music charity; Youth Music! Due to the charities 10th birthday, Rankin asked 70 musicians and visual artists to "destroy" their own portraits taken by the iconic photographer. This would eventually lead to an iconic, original piece of work produced by the artist themselves. The the chosen musicians for the project had also inspired Rankin's son Lyle and his love of music.

Rankin's work has been created with the collaboration with music/visual artists. The outcome begins with the photographing the artists portrait! This is natural to Rankin as portrait photography is something which he specialists in. After the portraits have been taken, it becomes the artists turn to start "manipulating them".

We then printed our fingers onto an A3 sheet and attempted to make multiple prints. The goal was to get a finger print with clear creases.

We then blew them up on the computer and turned them black and white in order to see them more clearly. We then printed them out.

After that, we had to then trace around the print and even draw in the creases.

Once we had done that, It was time to take our polyester base and trace the blown up fingerprint onto the base. However the aim wasn't to just draw the markings on, we had to make a small and not so deep edge of my print, on the base.

This was our time to now experement with new materials.

We had to put a small dollop of paint on to the art pallet, and used the paint roller to roll the paint out. We then printed the paint from the roller onto our chosen material, and so on.

What tool was best for what?
A sharp pencil was ideal to make the mark on the polystyrene base, however too sharp would have put the pencil all the way through.
How could you use either in celebrating difference?
I can use this in my project as fingerprints are part of your identity and I could use them in a variety of ways.

Likes
What I like about this image is that its torn which can represent self self destruction or the feeling of being broken. I feel like you can take away lots of emotion from this image. The way it has been edited also, makes the image seem more cold, and lifeless. What I like most about this image is the little crinkles caused by the scrumping up of the image. It fits nicely in contrast to the image underneath it.

Dislikes
What I dont like about this image is the negative space to the bottom right. I feel like if I were to go back and re-edit this image I would have added the extra bit of scrumped up paper to the bottom right corner.

What do they remind you of?
This image reminds me of the head shots and the portraits that you can see on the cover photos of 13 Reasons Why. I think I link the sires to this image because the episodes are all about mental health and raising awareness. Also some of the editing makes the images look similar to each other.

How did you edit this image?
To edit this image, I first used the colour balance in order to get this cold/blue effect. I then decreased the saturation to make the image seem more lifeless.

What artist could you link them with?
I can link this piece of work to the Rankin Destroy project, as the project is all about people destroying their self portraits. The project also bases its self around mental health problems and the project is to help raise awareness.

Would you use any of these techniques in the celebrating difference project?
I could use these techniques in this project as a way of representing self destruction and mental health. I could also use these techniques and link them back to identity, as they are self portraits.

Likes
What I like about this image is that the colours fit in nicely together as they clash and contrast against with one other. I also like how the image has been interwoven as it adds complexity and detail to the image.

Dislikes
What I dont like about this image is the top right hand corner. I feel like I should have edited it out white like the background

What do they remind you of?
This image reminds me of the 'crazy' music video by gnarls Barkley. It shows moving inkblots transforming into more inkblots. This idea of Rorschach tests and psychological interpretation fits in really well with my project, mental health. It will also allow the audience to dictate what they see. It also reminds me of The prodigy's Out of space music video also. Personally I love this thermal like effect.

How did you edit your image?
To edit my image I firstly posterize
the image to get the distortion. I then used the hue and sat tab in order to find these contrasting colours.

Would you use any of these techniques in the celebrating difference project?
I could use these techniques with in my project in order to show how complex a single persons identity is. I could also use this t show the complexity of a mental health issue.

What theme did you chose and why?

The theme I chose was culture. I chose this theme in order to do something new and explore something outside of my comfort zone. I loved exploring chinatown and the culture behind it, the vibrant colours made it easier to capture the vibe/atmosphere of the location. I also chose this theme in order educate myself a little bit and make myself more culturally aware, as chinatown in in Newcastle. Choosing chinatown was a much easier solution than going to the west end to get the Islamic culture. Which is what I would have done, as my partner is part of that culture. However the west end of newcastle is too plain and common for me to explore.

How did you explore this theme?

I chose the theme culture because of its vibrant colours and differences. To start with I researched Jacob James, A british travel photographer who captures people and places in the world. Themes that are common in his work are colours and textures. He shows this through a range of street photography, Portraits and Landscapes. I was then inspired to visit chinatown and explore their culture through the use of colours.

How did you create your final imagery?

To create my final images I used a range of tools in order to bring out the colours in my images. I used tools such as; Hut/Sat, Curves, Levels, Exposure and the brush tool.

What improvements would you make to your final images if you had more time or a better skillset? Why?

I feel like I had more time to do a third shoot on Chinatown my images would be much better as I believe the more shoots you do the better images you get. For example, on my second shoot I noticed much more items and colours I wanted to get photos of. It's like going with a fresh pair of eyes.
