Math: Chapter 9- Add and Subtract Fractions

Dear Family,
On Tuesday we will begin the Add and Subtract Fractions chapter. Students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. They will also learn how to estimate sums and differences of fractions, as well as how to add and subtract mixed numbers.

Due to the short week, my goal is to get through the first 3 lessons by Friday. Plan on your student having three homework assignments, the My HW page for lesson 1 (pp. 617-618,) lesson 2 (pp. 623-624,) and lesson 3 (629-630.) I have also attached the My Homework pages to the newsletter, so as to avoid any potential problems or allegedly missing math books!

Below are the vocabulary words for this chapter. I have also listed activities you can do at home or in the car, along with a list of books you can read.

like fractions: fractions that have the same denominator: 1/5 and 3/5 have the same denominator; they are like fractions

unlike fractions: fractions that have different denominators. 1/2 and 3/8 have different denominators; they are unlike fractions

simplest form: the form of a fraction when the greatest common factor of its numerator and denominator is 1

least common denominator (LCD): the least number that is a multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions

least common multiple (LCM): the least multiple, other than 0, common to sets of multiples
multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15
The LCM of 2 and 3 is 6.

AT HOME ACTIVITY

Materials: cookbooks (or recipes printed from the Internet), pencil, paper

• Select five recipes for use in the activity.
• Read each recipe and write all of the fractional measurements for each recipe on a piece of paper.
• Add the fractions from each recipe containing
the same type of ingredient, for example, liquids.
• Write the different totals in order from smallest to largest.
• Find the difference between the largest total and the smallest total.

TRAVEL TALK
While driving in the car, tell your student the fractional amount of gasoline you
have left in your tank (for example, “I have 1/4 of a tank of gas left”). Instruct your student to calculate how much gasoline you have used.

BOOKS TO READ
Pizza Counting by Christina Dobson
The Fraction Family Moves West by Marti Dryk
