As a member of the SEND team at our school, I found this really interesting and something which, I think, could be very powerful to look at in regards to the whole curriculum. Also, I think it would be beneficial for all staff to share their ideas across year groups as there are likely to be lots of strategies that we each use.

Very inspired by the idea of using texts such as poetry as a hook for subjects across the curriculum. Eg Geography and History. We have a tendency to reserve poetry for English.

This morning’s discussion regarding the curriculum reinforces what we want our curriculum to be, which is ambitious for all and for teaching is adaptive in include all learners. Not an always an easy task, so these reflections and examples are helpful for staff to hear.

Creating thinking classrooms and encouraging curiosity

How do we create a classroom where children come in expecting to engage in thinking? For all children to engage and not to feel overwhelmed is tricky.

Is it ok to enter into problem solving in maths for example where there are things that you have yet ‘been taught’?

- is the need to know in order to solve the problem is a driver for learning?

I think this approach needs careful planning though - have seen some ineffective problem solving lessons where children are cast adrift.

I am really interested in how to encourage children to stay mathematically curious - it seems that children are curious in our early years setting. What happens to this natural curiosity as children move through maths lessons in school?
