Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock, lacking a physical description, can be defined as an inquisitive character who is very confident in his accusations and ideas. He can be rather impolite in certain situations but can always decide on a culprit.

Dr. John Watson - Watson, being described as a red-headed man, is an intellectual individual as well. Sherlock far passes him in the department, but Watson has more experience in different fields, such as the medical area. He is more of a listener who makes small suggestions to his companion that lead to the ultimate discovery of hat happened.

Mr. Jabez Wilson - Wilson is an elderly, stout man with extremely bright red hair. He works as a pawnbroker and has an assistant who helps run the business named Vincent Spaulding. He is dressed as an average British tradesman, and Sherlock defines that he has done manual labor based on the state of his hands. He is the one puzzled by the red-headed league after attempting to join it.

Mr. Merryweather - A bank director wanting a chase and wishing to help in the issue, having presented that his bank has been threatened multiple times.

Peter Jones - A police agent who is extremely interested in arresting John Clay and contributing to the catching of the suspect.

John Clay (Vincent Spaulding) - The red-headed criminal who committed the attempted robbery and working with a fake league to distract one long enough. He hid underneath a fake name to work for Mr. Wilson to work on his tunnel while he was away, working for the fake Red-Headed League. He is also described as a murderer, thief, smasher, forger, and a remarkable young man who is well-educated. He demands respect from others.

Summary:

Throughout the story, it is Mr. Jabez Wilson telling Holmes and Watson of his account with an advertisement describing something called the Red-Headed League. It is described as an exclusive job opportunity restricted to men with red hair. As Mr. Wilson is in fact a red-head, he applies and manages to be accepted. He is required to work from ten to two, and is told to copy out the Encyclopedia Britannica. The main rule is he is unable to leave the building. After about eight weeks, he returned for his job and there was a sign saying the league was dissolved. Mr. Wilson asked around for his boss but was unable to find him anywhere, learning he had used a fake name. Sherlock goes to Wilson's and finds the assistant to ask for directions but notices the man's knees. They are covered in dirt and that leads to the discovery of finding that the assistant of Mr. Wilson, supposedly named Vincent Spaulding is truly John Clay who has been burrowing a tunnel to break into the vault of Mr. Merryweather's bank. He is caught just upon breaking the ground by the party of Holmes, Watson, Merryweather, and Jones.

As collected from Sherlock, he realized there was a hollow passage underneath the street leading from the bank to the pawnshop Mr. Wilson worked. Holmes also figured out that Vincent Spaulding, the assistant, had dirt covering his knees, indicating he had been digging and working on them. He also came to the understanding that Mr. Spaulding, secretly John Clay, had recommended the Red-Headed League to Mr. Wilson after only working for him for about a month's time. Holmes also dictated that the heist must be occurring soon because of the dissolving of the Red-Headed League, only meaning that the tunnel must've been completed.

In my opinion, I think The Red-Headed League is a good story and had a very interesting storyline. While it was a little slow at first and difficult to follow, it became exciting and more compelling as the story developed. Overall, I felt that it was a very good story, even though it was peculiar. -Sara

While the story was well-written, it seemed like everything was compiled towards the ending, needing to fill in empty holes. However, this could've been purposeful on Doyle's part. The wrapping up towards the end seems somewhat cliche for a Sherlock short story, but nonetheless, it was a fairly good read.

There are fake names used throughout the story as the founder of the Red-Headed League, such as Mr. Duncan Ross and Mr. William Morris. Mr. Wilson is told that it was first Ross who had formed it but his name was truly Morris. When asking where his new office was, it only turned out to be a manufactory of artificial kneecaps and no one ever existed to be called either of those names.
